Life and Work with Jasmine Chang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Chang.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Everything started after a class I took at USC about branding. Without knowing what was ahead of me after graduation, I thought, “why not take what I learned and just start writing about something that I’m passionate about and maybe build a personal brand?” There, J’s LA LA Land was born. It’s about premium denim and all things LA. Gradually, people started taking notice and the followings grew. Throughout the years, I have established myself as a reputable Los Angeles fashion/lifestyle influencer for my bilingual (Chinese and English) readers as well as a creative marketing strategist and Asian startup consultant based in both LA and Taipei. For the past few years, I have also founded a creative agency with a couple of good friends and done branding, marketing, and crowdfunding campaigns for tech startups in Taiwan in the hopes of assisting them in their success of breaking into the U.S. market and reaching more people outside of Asia. Even though like all businesses, there were ups and downs, the journey itself is fruitful and I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned and achieved along the way.

Now, stepping into the next chapter of my life, I’m now penning an LA, Vegas travel guidebook with my photographer friends for a well-known Chinese travel publishing house in the hopes of shedding some lights on the real, insider LA the Angeleno way. After all, LA isn’t just about Disney or Universal Studios, it is the capital of entertainment and creativity and I’d love to help people realize that and become as mesmerized and inspired by the city as I’ve always been.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been a bumpy ride. Even though I didn’t start the brand/blog as a means to make ends meet, it was supposed to be a side career, something to kill time. However, with very niche topics and audiences, the blog somehow took off in a way I couldn’t have imagined. Now, people came to me for advice about denim and all things LA.

However, building a personal brand is never easy and is always an ongoing process. You need to constantly update your content and interact with your audience. It takes lots of time and effort to manage all platforms especially with all these social media going on. Being consistent, proactive and interactive is the key.

If you just started or about to embark on this journey, I’d suggest focusing on what you are passionate about or good at first, know your stuff, dive in and write with depth. It’s crucial to figure out who your TA is and what they are interested in and try to cater to that without losing a sense of who you are and what you are doing. Do it with lots of passion, that will be my mantra for all bloggers.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
As an influencer, I focus on premium denim, lifestyle gadgets and all things LA.

I started the blog with my passion for premium denim. However, in recent years, due to the nature of my work, I started blogging about lifestyle gadgets as well (since my full-time job is a global creative marketing consultant for tech startups in Taiwan).

One thing remains consistent is my love for LA. By constantly sharing what’s hip and new in LA, where the locals go, how Angelenos spend their days and for people who are traveling to LA, where to go, eat and take photos as well as how to dress for the occasions during different time of the year, how to arrange their travel itinerary, these are what my readers are most interested in and I’ve always tried my best to keep them real and neat and practical. I believe this is what sets me apart as the go-to person for insider LA fashion, lifestyle and travel.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Know who you are, what your strengths are, what you are passionate about and then never lose that.
Believe in yourself and fight with everything you’ve got.
