Life and Work with Janai Evans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janai Evans.

Janai, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in South Central LA, I’ve always been a dreamer. Having that gut feeling of desiring more than my surroundings were providing, I easily took to performing arts, fashion, and cosmetology. At 18, I received my cosmetology license and began doing hair which later led to makeup. And in the midst of all that, also decided to dive heart first in singing and songwriting.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, there are the struggles. Where would we be without those lol. I’ve faced many challenges on my journey, and I’m sure there will be more. What I’ve learned is it’s not always about what happens to you. But in fact, how you choose to deal with what has happened. The choice to keep on going and remain positive at any cost. So to the women just starting, it’s easy to give up. Manifest your way into the things you desire. Think it, believe it. And it’s yours.

Please tell us about your work.
I’d like to think of myself as a jack of all trades. I literally Have my hands in a bit of everything. Cosmetology is, however, my money maker. After years of cutting and styling both women and men’s hair, I now Only cut men’s hair. I’ve worked in several barbershops, and I love Cutting. But soon I will Be saying goodbye to cutting hair forever and give wholeheartedly to branding myself in the makeup and beauty community. I also Do a little modeling and have had the pleasure of working with the beautiful Angel Brinks. I walked my very first NY fashion show for fashion week. It was a big deal for a girl like me from South Central LA. I sing, write songs and have such a huge love for the art. After a few unfortunate events in the music industry, I decided to take a break. For it was not fun for me anymore and having to deal with the business side of it really took a toll on my creativity. I’m ready to get back in now since I’m a bit older and can definitely apply what I’ve learned over the years. I’m different simply because I am ME!! I strive to be that person you don’t forget after you meet me. And I love Making people smile and feel good about themselves.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Set Goals baby girl!!! Short-term and long-term goals. Write them down and put them in a place where you can see them before you go to bed and when you wake up. So you are always thinking of it. Law of attraction is real. Attract what you desire. And go for it. JUST GO FOR IT ALL!!
