Life and Work with Jana Bunge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jana Bunge.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My father was a hairdresser – so I’ve grown up in and around the beauty business! I’ve been a working professional in this industry since 1984. With a background in commercial, video and print work – I began to include providing makeup/hairstyling for weddings in the early 2000’s. As the years progressed, I’ve added makeup/hair artists to our teams. We currently service Ventura, Santa Barbara, LA and Orange Counties – and are blessed to have the most wonderful bride and bridal parties. We feel honored to share in the most important day of their lives!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a steady road – sometimes, smooth and sometimes very rocky. Overcoming struggles is part of this industry. Times of plenty, and lean times – but the most important thing to remember is that as a “service” business – our goal is to meet the needs of our clients. And this business is about relationships… building and nurturing relationships with our clients, fellow vendors, and artist teams. When relationships blossom – so will your business!

Advice to young women starting this journey? Integrity above all…

Please tell us about Jana and Co. Makeup and Hair Design.
Jana and Co. Makeup and Hair Design provide onsite makeup and hair services for wedding, special events, productions, as well as offering group and private instruction. We are known for our quality work, personable artist teams and meeting and surpassing the needs of each client we come in contact with. I am proud and humbled to have such fabulous and skilled artists. We strive to do our best to create an atmosphere of calm during what can often be a very stressful time in the life of a bride to be!

The prep/”pre-production” work that I do prior to any event is what I believe sets us apart from many other companies. Creating a specific timeline, storyboards of our clients and vision pics – and especially having our artist teams arrive on site fully prepared (i.e. tables, chairs, electrical, all equipment and products, etc.) All of this combined will create a calm work atmosphere and seamless wedding day. We love our brides and bridal parties!

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
The most important advice is twofold:

First and foremost – be a person of integrity! Having integrity means doing the right thing in a reliable way.
It means “wholeness of character” – having a moral compass that doesn’t waver. People of integrity and honesty not only practice what they preach, they ARE what they preach. When I look for people to hire, I look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. Integrity is your destiny – it is the light that will guide your way.

Secondly – remember that this IS a service business. It’s NOT about YOU! The ultimate goal is to meet the needs of your client, nurture and build relationships and never stop learning and cultivating your craft. Stay up to date on trends – but keep in mind the steadfastness of classic beauty… inside and out!
