Life and Work with Holly (“Hollyhood”) Burson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly (“Hollyhood”) Burson.

Holly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I withdrew from university back in October or November of 2016. I moved back to LA where I’m originally from with the intention of pursuing a career within the Beauty Industry.

In January of 2017, I began the cosmetology program at Paul Mitchell the School and while I was there, I pursued an apprenticeship for tattooing.

When tattooing didn’t go as I had thought it would and I finally graduated Paul Mitchell about two years later, I went right to getting certified as a Microblading and Permanent Makeup Artist.

Ever since then, I’ve been building up my business of HollyhoodLA Permanent Makeup & Eyelash Extensions as well as my career as a Permanent Makeup Artist and Eyelash Technician.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It definitely has not been easy. Opening and supporting your own business at the age of 23 with little direction is definitely a marathon, not a sprint.

From practicing and refining my Microblading/Permanent Makeup skills in general, to learning how to navigate a business presence on social media, as well as making sure I figure out what the hell write-off’s and taxes even are, it has been a learning experience that I continue to grow through every day and I have never looked back.

The best advice I can give, as corny as it may sound, is to simply grow through what you go through.

In the past, particular obstacles pertaining to my individual such as my mental health, personal relationships, and confidence have slowed my progress. However, I figured out towards the end of cosmetology school, that unless I want to fulfill my visions and dreams for my own success, those obstacles will be the slow decline of my career.

I had to make the conscious decision to figure it out and deal with whatever I was currently dealing with because truly the only way through most things is to just start by starting.

Make the conscious decision that those challenges and obstacles are going to be LESSONS, not mistakes. Learn from everything, keep an open mind, and keep your best interest at the forefront of everything.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with HollyhoodLA – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a Permanent Makeup Artist (PMUA) & Lash Technician, as well as a business owner.

I specialize in Microblading, which is the art of using fine microblades that deposit pigment in hairlike strokes to create the semi-permanent illusion of fluffy, full brows that many men and women struggle with. Whether its an issue of confidence or any individuals are suffering from conditions such as Alopecia, microblading is a great solution that lasts 1-2 years.

The clients I see most are lash extension clients which is a very popular service whether you’re going on vacation, to a special occasion, or you simply enjoy spending less time in front of the mirror in the morning.

What I am most proud of is how I’ve been building my business and progressing as an artist. The amount of support I have gained over the years is proof that I’m changing lives and helping people through their trust and my skills.

I believe that what sets me apart from the “others”, is how highly I prioritize my clients. Naturally, without them, I would not be able to do what I love on a daily basis, so I am forever grateful. Because of this, my main priority has always been the maintenance of their faith and trust. Not only has my business advanced in the past year because of my loyal clients, but I have also become close with some of my guests and am so thankful to be able to connect with such amazing people through my profession.

Who have you been inspired by?
I’ve had lots of inspirational female figures in my life which were a huge part of my drive to work on where I’m going daily.

Some of these people include celebrity Microblading artists of MicrobladingLA, Lindsey Ta, celebrity Microblading Artist, Sandi R. Jones, and my personal main inspiration, Miss Sara Jennifer of @ibrow.solutions.

Lindsey Ta was my very first introduction to the world of Microblading. She is the reason I am doing what I do today! And for that introduction, I am forever grateful. I will always be striving to accomplish as much as she has within her craft and her very successful business in Woodland Hills.

Sandi R. Jones was my instructor and she is also the owner of Couture Brows. She gave me such in-depth information and shared her personal experiences with me that guided me to the goal of hopefully owning and running my own Permanent Makeup Academy one day. I admire her drive and hustle so much, no one could ever make me feel as lazy as she does! From constantly traveling to teach her passion and profession as well as never saying no to any student of hers, she will always set the bar high.

Last, but definitely not least, Miss Sara Jennifer of ibrow solutions located in Burbank. I met Sara when she was my trainer for eyelash extensions. Personally, I get along with most people, but rarely become close or comfortable anyone. However, Sara Jennifer was such a great instructor and has such extensive knowledge on not only skills pertaining to Permanent Makeup and Eyelash Extensions, but her hustle and her business is an amazing demonstration of the strong woman she is and that is what success is to me. Never stopping and only getting stronger.

To this day, I’ll take any excuse to see her and pick her brain. I’m even scheduled to get my brows touched up by her next week.

These three women are classified as my main inspirational figures when it comes to my career because regardless of the career we all have in common, I truly believe that these women’s stories and experiences are applicable to any young woman aspiring to be the best she can be.
