Today we’d like to introduce you to Florence and Alizée Klein.
This is a mother/daughter adventure in creation. After many years as an Anchor on National French Television, I felt the need for another form of creation. I had been wearing a very famous fashion designer’s clothes on TV and I wanted to create my own. My daughter Alizée had done a Master’s Degree in a Paris Business School and she had done many internships in Finance and Marketing in many different places around the world and decided to be a designer/entrepreneur. I had lived and studied in New York ( Master’s in International Relations and Comparative Politics at NYU and an Executive MBA with NYU Stern), so I considered myself as a New York City girl.
As we were designing, we figured that the kind of clothes we were creating would be more appreciated in Los Angeles as we had this glamour touch and a strong will to empower women by making them feel beautiful. Red carpets and the many events happening here in LA give a great opportunity for designers to show their creativity and we felt adopted by the women we were dressing which were so rewarding.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Fashion is an industry even though we mainly think of it as an art. So, along the road, you figure all the drawbacks of an industry. The financial aspect for example. Fashion requires huge investments before hoping to get something back. Fashion also involves so many different aspects from sourcing to manufacturing to sales both wholesale and retail, bookkeeping, all these aspects few people think about as creation is the main driver we have when we start. It’s a tough world also with its rules and you have to learn all the codes before being accepted. The best advice to young designers would be: Anything is possible, be passionate and be humble, it’s a bumpy road but it’s worth it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Alexia Klein – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The Alexia Klein brand specializes in Haute Couture. We create evening gowns, tops, long skirts and coats with beautiful fabrics. We value high quality both in the fabrics we choose which are a great inspiration and the know how. The details are what make a garment so special. We also are very attentive to shapes. Women feel at their best when the clothes respect their body. We design for the women, to make them look great, promote the best in them and hide what they don’t like about themselves. We respect them and being women ourselves we know their feelings, fashion is an art but it’s also psychology. That is why we wanted a fashion brand for women created by women who would respect and value them.
Alexia Klein is in a niche market, we work on one to one with special orders from independent clients or with boutiques with a strong vision.
What we are the proudest of is when a woman tells us that she has never looked like that before. You can feel the emotion and the pride in her voice and of course the confidence. That is when we can say: Mission accomplished.
We also are proud of being involved since the beginning in a fight that is very close to our hearts. We are both Ambassadors for the NGO, Stop Trafficking Of People which fights against all sorts of Human trafficking.
Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
We have great confidence in a bright future for women. So many things have been happening lately and hopefully, we will never go backward. Of course, living in a free country makes us very lucky and there are still many fights to be fought in many other areas. Thanks to very courageous women, women today can do what they want in life. Of course, when you look at numbers it can be scary sometimes but
in the coming years, we will see many great women in the Entertainment Industry, Technology Start-Ups and in Politics. And we believe that we will do that with men because we are not opposed, just different and that what makes a world complete and interesting.
