Life and Work with Christina Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Thomas.

Christina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up in Virginia, I always wanted to do things my way and venture off on my own path. My first business plan I completed was for a wellness day spa to help others feel good about themselves both physically and mentally. I moved to LA to get out of my comfort zone- yes I’m an extremist, and I started off with a smaller goal by doing Lashes. At first, it was just something I did to make money on the side. As time passed, it became more and more of a career I was actually falling in love with. I always loved playing a part in making people feel better about themselves. Although offering spa services like facials and waxing is still a goal of mine, right now, I’m enjoying the ride and learning along the way.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth may not be a word I’d choose for the road I’m on (I joke)! But it is exciting! Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy but it’s rewarding. I was previously an assistant to a CEO which was great training but extremely time-consuming and stressful. Not much different than what I do now on the back end. Learning the social media beast, balancing purchasing supplies, having a work/life balance, being a mother and partner, my podcast and all the other million things was one of the slight struggles. People assume being an entrepreneur is having your own time, less responsibility and fun and games. You have to earn that and respect the process.

My advice to other women would be, 1- take your time, there is no rush on success or get rich quick way to your goals it’s a marathon, not a sprint. 2- if you have the money, pay the bill, 3- be consistent in all you do. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a visual artist first! I paint, make sculptures, music, and create beautiful lashes. While I do still paint and sell my art, being a certified lash artist is my main focus right now. Lash extensions are exciting and ever-changing. You can do so many different t styles and looks just like any other type of styling. It’s very similar to painting in that manner.

I’m very proud of coming to a huge city where there are so many women and men providing the same kind of service and still being able to maintain a profitable business. I didn’t know a soul in Los Angeles, I didn’t have a million friends to practice on. So, my resilience will always be something I’ll beat my chest for. I do not give up. With or without a support system. Period.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
BE YOURSELF and allow that to work for you. If you find or choose a mentor based on fake, what do you expect to get out of that? Trust your gut, if you’re not getting the welcoming vibes, that’s probably not the leader for you. If you’re rejected, take that and allow it to fuel you not paralyze you.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to people you want to work with or collaborate with, make sure it’s for the right reasons if you don’t hear anything back, remember resilience and consistency are key!
