Life & Work with Brittney Ortiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Ortiz.

Hi Brittney, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I developed a love for baking at a very young age. In my family, that is how we express our love to one another. By the time I was in high school, I was baking daily, everyone knew they could come over to my house and there would be freshly prepared baked goods. But at this time, I just looked at it as a hobby, I never really considered making a living from it.

I moved to Los Angeles, CA in 2010, and found myself torn between working in a kitchen and working for private doctors. No matter what field I was in, I continued baking and sharing my creations with my co-workers and bosses. It was not until the Pandemic that I was truly able to recognize what skills I have and what I wanted to do with them. So I started Suga Mama’s Bakeree, a Class B Cottage Food Operation, meaning the county of Los Angeles and the Public Health Department has permitted me to create baked goods from my home kitchen to sell directly to the public, restaurants, grocery stores, and mobile food facilities.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It would be wonderful to be able to say all smooth sailing, but I believe the road worth taking is the road less traveled. So far, my biggest obstacles have been financing my company, marketing, and trying to connect with others during a pandemic that promotes social distancing. Being a self-taught baker born and raised in the Coachella Valley with very humble beginnings. I am the first in my family to be a business owner. Everything I have learned I have had to teach myself or learned from paying attention to those around me. From my time living in Los Angeles, I have had the opportunities to work for very successful, intelligent business owners, who have helped me to expand my capacity and awareness to be able to clearly see my goals and execute them properly.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I bake homemade baked goods 100% from scratch with the best quality ingredients I can find, specializing in recipe development. All the baked goods I offer, I have worked on developing for over a year, some longer. I am most proud of my 48Hr Chocolate Chip Cookie and my S’mores Rice Krispie Treat. What sets me apart from others is my drive and outlook. I find that there are no problems only solutions.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I would have to say my thirst for knowledge. I want to know everything there is to know about baking, and I strongly believe in the phrase, “you learn something new every day”. So my pursuit can never truly be fulfilled.
