Life and Work with Brittany Brooks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Brooks.

Brittany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started when I was just a little hyper kid, always looking for the road less traveled. LOL, I always did what I wanted to do and not what was popular. To everyone’s surprise, in the 6th grade, I decided I wanted to learn how to play the drums and my parents met me with full support! From early on, it was my dream to someday play drums professionally and tour the world playing for large crowds! After moving to Los Angeles from my hometown, Oakland, Ca, attending Musicians Institute and doing my fair share of auditioning, I landed my first professional gig playing drums for Ceelo Green. That gig allowed me to achieve my dreams! Over the years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to see the world and make a living doing something I am more than passionate about! In more recent times, I have also picked up a camera and have been exploring another passion, videography, and filmmaking!

In 2017, I created a coloring book called The Drummer Girl that animates my life journey as a drummer from beginner to professional! The book is available on Amazon! I have plans to make a 2nd edition of the book but this time as a full-color book for children!

Today I am in the process of essentially “recreating” myself and developing like a one-woman show that involves a mix of acoustic and electronic drums! Stay tuned!

Has it been a smooth road?
I can’t particularly say it been a smooth road… LOL. There are so many uncertainties in this industry and you have to have thick skin! When Im on tour, life is a breeze! Everything is smooth! But there are stretches of time that you may not be working and you have to prepare for you! Mentally and financially! I haven’t always done the best with either… lol.

I came to the realization that typically as a drummer, you working generally relies on an artist hiring you to play for them or needing an entire band to work. Im over that! Which is why I want to create a brand that needs no other moving parts to successfully operate!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Brittany Brand – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Firstly, I am a creative! My brand is multifaceted and I love that I have multiple passions that are essentially different from the other!

I am a drummer. That is my number one passion! I can happily play drums for the rest of my life! I reached my goals with that profession and just want to keep going!

I am a videographer and eventually want to write and direct my own films! Currently, I love creating and shooting random visuals I think up in my head, spec commercials, music videos, etc. I am a product junkie so I have tons of film making equipment that Im still learning how to use! Lol.

You will start to see my love for drumming and videography come together in the near future! 🙂

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Honestly, with everything I do, the industry is saturated with men so I feel very appreciated whenever I am operating in my passions because it’s almost a novelty to see a woman killing it! Women filmmakers and women drummers are on the rise right now!
