Life and Work with Austine Jensen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austine Jensen.

Austine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always loved to create but I remember telling myself in high school that I would never go to fashion school, that no matter what I loved to do, I needed to go to a 4-year college in order to be successful. Well, two years into attending Sonoma State, I realized life is too short to not be doing what you love to do, so I packed up my dorm and transferred to the fashion school I always should have started at. I majored in Footwear design and spent seven years traveling from California to China working on 2-4 footwear collections a season. I absolutely loved it, but I was designing 100’s of shoes a year and was starting to feel burned out.

I have always wanted to own my own business and was feeling called to create it. Quitting my job was one of the scariest things I’ve ever had to do but being able to call all the shots and have the complete creative freedom to design what I love has made it the best decision I ever made.

Today I am working on building the brand, sourcing new materials and designing new styles to add to the collection.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Owning a business is not for the faint of heart. There are days I think to myself what did you do? But there are more days where I think to myself look what you created, you’re doing great, keep going. I think it’s important to be your biggest cheerleader and not let fear get in your way. There will be a lot of people who doubt you and frankly would love to see you fail so it’s your responsibly to drown them out and keep going. For anyone wanting to start your own business, I would advise you to find your passion and go after it wholeheartedly by being your authentic self.

Has it been a smooth ride? Absolutely not! A huge roadblock I hit early on was having to find a new factory after we had already gone through one round of production. At the time I was so discouraged and upset, but it ended up being a blessing in disguise. I was lucky I found out early we were not a good fit and was able to pivot into a much better situation.

Please tell us about All Beings Clothing.
I started All Beings because I wanted to design shirts that brought wearable good vibes to life. I use real gemstones to amplify the message of the shirts – the cool things about crystals is that each one is unique and carries a different meaning so it’s fun incorporating them into my designs. Sustainable fashion is something I am passionate about, so I choose to use organic cotton and have my shirts made in the USA. I think what sets me apart from other designers is that I’m doing this not only because I love it, but also because I want to help change the fashion industry for the better by raising the standards of how we are producing and selling goods.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Don’t let anyone or anything stand in your way. In my experience, I was the one who was holding myself back the most by telling myself I was too shy, or that I needed to know everything about what I was doing before I could even attempt to start a business. Just go for it! You can do it, you deserve it and you don’t need to know it all. You’ll learn a lot along that way, and you can make changes if you need too.
