Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlee Wakefield.
Ashlee, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My two worlds between health and acting finally intersected about one year ago. I studied both Visual Arts/Media and Health Education/Holistic Health in undergrad. While I was integrating myself into the health industry, I was also photographing, creating a clothing company, and building an online magazine platform. I’ve had my hands in different areas for as long as I can remember. I just had so many purpose driven ideas that I was eager to create. Seeing each project through to completion was my weak point. Working full time, while going to school full time did not align the best with all that I was trying to accomplish. Not to mention, once I finally gained traction with one project, I’d have another bright idea that I just HAD to start.. somehow finding a way to intertwine and rationalize it all. I’ve had a little entrepreneur and creativity in me since I was a child.
I was studying in Australia when I took to the other side of the camera and quickly began working as a model. I fell in love with all of the different environments, creatives, personalities, and projects that I got to work with each day. It was very energizing for me. When I got back home to the Bay Area, I immersed into the industry immediately and was introduced to commercials. That took off quickly.. one thing led to another.. I was visiting New York and ended up booking the lead for a Pilot. I remember the adrenaline rush that I had after shooting six episodes for almost 30 hours with maybe 3 hours of sleep between. I had experienced adrenaline from sports before, but nothing like this one. I knew in those moments that my passion was fueled and that I wanted to be an Actor.
All the while, my Holistic Health path is happening simultaneously. I’m growing passionate about the healing power of herbs, acupuncture, yoga, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, massage therapy, reiki, you name it. Things took a turn both when I was infected with parasites and while managing an acupuncture clinic. I was treated for the parasites outside of the U.S. but my stomach was never the same upon returning. I lived with excruciating pain for a while and the western Medical Doctor’s weren’t able to heal it. It wasn’t until I went back out of the states and converted to a vegan diet that I was completely healed within one month. I was entirely persuaded (if I wasn’t already) of the direct correlation between the food that we consume and our health. Then comes the acupuncture clinic where I spent a lot of time around the mixing of herbs, educating patients and ultimately being healed emotionally, mentally, and physically myself through these practices-natural practices that are rooted in centuries of tradition. Needless to say, I started mixing my own herbs, treating my own stress/ailments at home through skin products and tea. I became obsessed with researching and learning about the benefits that I was receiving by using certain plants and how adding one to another strengthens the power of each. I wanted everyone to experience the clarity, smooth skin and lighter spirit that I was, so I started my company!
I formed my company legally, right before moving to LA. I had taken close to 2 years away from the industry prior to moving here. It’s really interesting how life always puts you right where you’re supposed to be, even when you don’t realize it or even may feel against it. It wasn’t until quitting my job at a Crypto Asset Fund in Venice, being confused, stressed and with struggle adapting to the differences of LA, that I realized my path toward acting. It literally came to me as an epiphany while I was jogging one day, and I remembered that I was supposed to be pursuing that. I acted on in immediately and have been steady on my path since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been far from smooth. Struggles are a part of life and challenges come with anything worthwhile. Needless to say, that I’ve experienced endless amounts of both. My advice to other women who are just starting their journey is to stay true to you. If you’re not sure who that is or what that means for you, then spend as much time as possible uncovering it. We all have an inner voice, it’s guidance.. listen to it and do not doubt yourself. Doubt only wastes time. Time continues with or without you. You must believe in you, for you. Keep that chin up love! Be prepared to pick yourself up when you fall and be excited and in expectant gratitude for those hiccups, delays, or falls. Everything will become clear eventually, just keep moving forward and toward a better you. Let your mindset always be, “what can I learn here?” Whatever you pick up WILL be helpful along your path. Even when it may seem irrelevant to your mission. Most importantly, keep showing up for yourself.
