Life and Work with Angela Kim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Kim.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been a hairdresser for almost seven years. In my last year of high school, I knew I wanted to work within the beauty industry. At the time I was very passionate about makeup and wasn’t into the hair at all. Initially, I had planned to pursue a career in makeup but that all changed when I went to cosmetology school. I enrolled in beauty school after graduating high school but ended up dropping out rather quickly. I think I was worried about making the wrong career choice and decided I couldn’t fully commit to it. I didn’t go to school and just worked full time for the next three years. Focusing on working, making money, and hanging out with my friends. I had no other goals or aspirations during that time. On that third year, I came to a realization that I wanted to do something more with my life. I enrolled myself in beauty school once again and focused only on completing my program. I was fortunate to receive my father’s help with pretty much everything. I quit my job and was able to attend full time and finish my program in one year.

I’m very grateful to have had his support in all my endeavors. Upon finishing my program and getting licensed, I worked as an assistant at my first salon Carlton Hair Beverly Center. I finished my assistant program and got on the floor as a stylist within a year and worked there for three years. Unfortunately, the salon had to shut its doors. Thankfully one of my great friends told me about her salon hiring(my current salon), so I called up immediately at had the awesome opportunity to try out for the team. I’ve been at Hairroin Salon for three and half years now. My salon attracts a diversity of clientele which I love, and it’s a fun place to work and grow creatively.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The first few years of hairdressing were challenging at times. There were definitely ups and downs, but every experience helped me learn and prepare for the next. The transition and move to a new salon was probably the biggest and scariest change in my career thus far. I lost some of my clients in the process, so it almost felt like starting over again but in the best way.

Honestly, I wouldn’t take anything back because I did a lot of growing up as a person and as an artist in these recent years. My advice for anyone just starting out in their journey is to first be okay with not being 100% sure about what you want to become or what you want to do in life. But in order to get closer to it, you have to keep searching for it. Always focus on yourself and practice the things that make bring joy to your life and help you grow. And always remember to have fun whatever you do!

Please tell us about your business.
I do mostly color and haircuts in the salon and occasionally do event styling as well. I love creating dimensional colors and textures in cuts. My goal is to create something special for each guest, so it’s very crucial to learn their likes and dislikes, but also what works best for their personal features and lifestyle. As a hairdresser, it’s extremely rewarding being able to make people feel awesome with a change in hairstyle.

Who do you look up to? How have they inspired you?
The women that have always inspired me are the ones that are independent. I don’t believe independence means to be single or do things alone. But being comfortable with yourself, having your own voice, and picking yourself up when times are tough. I think that kind of independence is beautiful and admirable.
