Inspiring Conversations with Tammy D’Onofrio of FitChick Granola

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy D’Onofrio.

Hi Tammy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2010, I was suddenly a single mom with a two and five years old. Quickly, I needed to figure out how I was going to support myself and my babies. I started offering group workouts and personal training to the moms in my community. I also counseled them on nutrition and would bring snacks to our workout sessions. The granola I made was a huge hit and my clients ultimately convinced me it was a marketable health food product. So this is how FitChick Granola was born. We launched in 2014 in one store in San Diego! We now have over 50 retail spots and an online store. Real, natural, whole delicious food is the foundation of FitChick Granola. It is my passion to empower, motivate, and educate people about the joy and necessity of living a healthy life. I want to lead by example and be a positive role model for my children. I want to empower women to love their bodies.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anything but smooth!!! Listen, I was a single mom living hand to mouth. Extra money was not available! I continue to be 100% self-funded. I’ve also had production issues scaling our product, I’ve had employee issues. It’s hard and there is a huge responsibility. I value my customers and putting healthy food on the shelves so I try to see these things as challenges not deal breakers!

As you know, we’re big fans of FitChick Granola. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Founded by personal trainer, single momma and healthy food chef, this yummy gluten-free snack has a cult following. FitChick Granola has dominated the Southern California market for years and is set to take over every other large city in the US. We are committed to bringing healthy, whole, small-batch food to the masses. Chock full of nutrients with none of the added sugar so many brands use. Curated over years of creating healthy meals and snacks for family and fitness clients.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Perseverance, grit and a belief in myself. I grew up in a chaotic environment. I had to take care of myself from an early age. Starting a business, running a business and maintaining momentum are crucial. You can’t allow hiccups or rejection to stop you! Use adversity as fuel!
