Inspiring Conversations with Rosaura Thun of Thun Improvements

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rosaura Thun.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My dad was a construction worker turned contractor working all around Southern California for the last 30 years.

He would take my brothers and I to his job sites and show us what he did all the time.

Growing up, he showed us all how to do things like drywall, paint rooms, build things from scrap wood.

So when he was diagnosed with cancer two years ago, I had this idea to start a blog teaching women how to use power tools to build their dream space.

But I pushed it off as I navigated the new role of caretaker for my dad.

Fast forward to last year when they told us his cancer had relapsed.

I thought to myself – I want his legacy to live on with me and my kids but I also want the world to know how much he loved what he did.

So I launched my business. And I started off on a blog, writing articles about power tools.

Then I went on social media, doing small DIY projects to motivate women to try it too.

Now I run a four weeks DIY course called DIY DREAM SPACE.

Where I put all my knowledge that I gathered from the years of working with my dad and being around the DIY world.

Not only does the course show women how to use power tools – it really gives them the confidence to tackle remodels and renovations on their own.

And I know that by offering this course, the women who go through it will come out with a new set of skills, confidence and real-life DIY home experience.

And that’s the legacy of my dad that I’m working towards 🙌🏽

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road to starting my business and getting people excited to use power tools has been hard.

Not only did I struggle with the business side of things like imposter syndrome, motivation to keep going even when no one was listening and really learning how to be more me on social media.

I also struggled with just life in general during this time.

In the last three years, my family has gone through some crazy a$$ stuff.

My mother is a breast cancer survivor. When she was diagnosed, my husband and I left our home in Santa Ana and moved in with my parents to help them financially.

A year after my mother’s diagnosis and surgery – my dad got sick.

And as stressful as it is – I am the first generation daughter of two immigrants.

And I know many can relate when I say I had to step up for my parents, my kids and my family to not only provide financially but to be there emotionally as we navigated this new terrain.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Thun Improvements?
What you need to know about Thun Improvements is that at our core, we are a family-centered business aiming to help women feel empowered by DIY and using power tools.

I would say I’m known for being obsessed with power tools, a little weird with a side of rock n roll and a whole lot of badassery.

I think what sets my business apart from others is that – I’m not teaching women how to do home decor and I know that’s big in the DIY space.

We all have our own unique style but what’s amazing is how we can all take basic tools and build something we absolutely love.

I’d love for the readers to know that DIY Dream Space is opening enrollment at the end of March and if you’re a creative soul looking to learn power tools to update your space…

I’d love for you to connect with me on Instagram (@thunimprovements) and sign up for the waitlist.

What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I really plan on increasing the offerings that we currently have.

I plan to host a lot of virtual workshops and if the world permits live workshops to teach women how to build.

I want to help beginner DIYers get comfortable being around tools and using them to create badass pieces that they love.
