Inspiring Conversations with Rebekah Zepfel of Lemon & Honey Day Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebekah Zepfel.

Hi Rebekah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
18 years ago I was in the spa industry and wanted to learn more about how to take better care of my skin. I became an Esthetician because of my drive to learn everything about skincare. Esthetics ended up being a perfect career for me because I love helping people and seeing the transformation and confidence that comes with loving your skin. There is nothing better than when you see someone truly smile and glow with happiness! I quickly became aware that in our industry there was no standard, as many estheticians graduate school but don’t receive additional training or education. After I graduated, I continued to do any and every training I could. I would try to do at least once a month. I would even take the same training over and over because I found I learned something new every time. I got facials from any esthetician I could and would get facials wherever I traveled. I took notes of what I liked and didn’t like.

I quickly learned that so many Estheticians were not exceeding or meeting my expectations. I am a very picky client! I wanted to work for a place where the staff was a team; where estheticians were equally passionate; where estheticians could go to anyone and know that the quality and skill was reliable; where management treated people fairly. I looked high and low and when I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I created it myself. When I opened Lemon & Honey seven years ago, I sought to break the mold of what it was to be an Esthetician and to create a team of passionate and talented estheticians who wanted to help others the same way I do. Looking back, I think we have done a great job doing just that. We have created a place where other Estheticians come to get an amazing treatment and a place they trust with their skin – that’s a huge accomplishment in my book!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I first opened Lemon & Honey, I had all the passion but lacked knowledge of what it would truly take. I thought I needed start-up capital, a good location, a quality team, quality products and of course loyal clients. It wasn’t until I had my first team meeting and went up to talk in front of my team that I realized I have a massive fear of public speaking! I was in front of my team with a shaky voice and shaky hands, barely able to get through the few notes I had.

I have had many other struggles as well. As a small business owner, you wear all the hats. Marketing director? That’s me. Maintenance guy? That’s me. HR manager? That’s me too. I learned I needed rules and systems to train to. I need policies and a dress code. And I needed to understand finances. Math? Not my strong suit. With sheer determination and a forward-thinking mentality, I began seeking mentors and guidance from people in the industry and even those outside.

My biggest lesson so far is to always be willing to step outside your comfort zone. After fear comes the most rewarding thing… accomplishing something you never thought you could! I learned that being vulnerable and open with the team was ok. But, also balancing that I am running a business, and the people who work for me need to understand their jobs and perform it at a high level. It’s a hustle everyday and just when you overcome one hurdle, there is another. Just like when COVID happened – we were forced to close, revenue halted and the workforce culture changed. But, I adapted! I started a skincare line. I began a financial plan to get a year’s worth of revenue stored so if another COVID happens, I would be ok. I created a hiring and training system to be able to grow with new employees, and grow quickly. You can’t expect smooth sailing, but you can learn from every situation and be better prepared for the next ones that comes. Keep to your plan and change your plan when you need to!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Today, Lemon & Honey has a fantastic team of skilled, knowledgeable estheticians and healing massage therapists. We utilize our signature skin analysis system and create custom facial routines for our clients. We are the masters of mixing and combine both Eastern and Western technology to treat skin concerns. We also have a unique way of looking at the skin that helps us diagnose and treat concerns. We combine our knowledge of the skin function with our knowledge of ingredients to mix the perfect remedy for each client. After each visit, guests leave with a Happiness Form, which reflects the unique facial that was created just for them and has tips and recommendations they need for home care. We are primarily known for our facials, but we also offer massages, body treatments, waxing and spray tans.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I definitely see a shift in our industry as Esthetics becomes less regulated and training for Estheticians becomes increasingly virtual. The next step for us is likely an L&H Esthetician training school. In the future, I hope to bring our training and systems to more Estheticians. My dream is to impact clients with our knowledge and expertise. I hope what we have created and learned can be shared with all Estheticians, especially recent graduates looking for guidance. My dream is to elevate Esthetician training and leave the industry better than I found it.
