Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Frustere.
Hi Nikki, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I remember one of the first Christmas dinners my mom finally let me help set up the table & decorations. It felt like doing a magic trick, transforming our classic living room into a holiday fairy tale. From that point on, I knew I loved the creative process of having a vision for something, working hard to achieve it and then seeing the look on people’s faces while they enjoyed it, it was an amazing feeling. While studying in college, I got my first job in events working for OC Weekly magazine and had a blast putting together events in the OC area, but I knew I wanted to end up in LA, so I started to look for opportunities there. I was able to secure a coveted internship at the Screen Actors Guild Publicity department and through that, I was hired by SAG to run their conservatory at AFI. I then transitioned into PR and then worked as a producer for various production companies for over ten years, producing a wide variety of events across the nation from the Philadelphia Barnes Foundation Opening, SAG Awards People Magazine gala, to most recently Variety Magazine’s Hitmaker event series that I’ve done for the last few years. I finally started my own female-owned & operated event planning company during the pandemic and I couldn’t be happier being my own boss and working with some of the amazing clients & colleagues I’ve garnered made lasting relationships with.
Through it all, my family has been my biggest support system, along with great friends I’ve had since college & met while living in LA. My late great father Michael always gave me sound business advice, my encouraging mom Dee helped me through the tough times, and my resilient sister Michelle and my amazing niece Madison have helped mold me into the woman I am today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The path to having a successful career in events is definitely NOT a smooth road. I’m so grateful for all the experiences I’ve had throughout my career and all the amazing people I’ve met and worked with that have inspired me. However, there will always be lots of ups and downs whether it be difficult client demands, challenging work environments, clashing personalities or otherwise. However, if you maintain a strong support system and always try to learn lessons from those hard times, a relentless sense of positivity while making every effort to remain calm during the chaos will serve you well. It’s also important to remain aware of what you’re willing to do and where you draw the line, as well as knowing your worth. Setting professional boundaries early on and remaining consistent & authentic will help you to keep up with the fast-paced environment.
The pandemic and the large-scale events industry basically closing for over a year taught me that nothing is written in stone and sometimes you have to get creative and make your own path. I think it made everyone in general take a long hard look at their lives and decide if they wanted to continue down the same path or forge a new one. I decided that it was finally time for me to take a leap of faith and bet on myself and although it’s been challenging, it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m the proud Founder & CEO of Nixx Events LA, a woman-owned and operated event planning, design, and production company based in LA, specializing in producing a select variety of private celebrations and boutique corporate events each year for distinguished clientele.
I pride myself on being able to effectively communicate with my clients, vendors, and colleagues to create and execute thoughtful events that exceed client expectations while building & maintaining lasting relationships with a calming kindness, relentless positivity, and entertaining sense of humor.
My style is classic & timeless but with a flair for modern luxury and the occasionally quirky, sexy or uniquely strange details that make each event I design a bespoke experience catering to my client’s wildest dreams.
How do you think about happiness?
Spending quality time with family & friends because it recharges me and reminds me I’m loved. Exploring new places, traditions and cuisines because I love being inspired by cultural traditions of entertaining and art forms. Being in nature and listening to live music because it feeds my soul and reminds me how rare and special getting to live this life is. When my event is in full swing and I get to exhale and have a fun moment with the client to hear their excitement & gratification.
