Inspiring Conversations with Nick Katleman of Storyflect

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Katleman.

Hi Nick, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been fascinated by the stories of the people around us. We all possess fascinating narratives that can entertain, inspire, and expand perspectives. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been passionate about capturing stories through words. I started off by scribbling in spiral notebooks in elementary school, and I graduated to ghostwriting books for business moguls, philanthropists, and investors.

A few years into my ghostwriting career, my grandfather approached me at a family dinner.

“I hear that you’re writing memoirs,” he said in a serious voice. “Would you be interested in hearing my story?”

I accepted whole-heartedly, excited to hear about what my grandfather wanted to share with me. Within the first few minutes of him speaking, I realized that I had never truly known my grandfather. We had spent countless hours together, but our conversations never got past the surface-level of casual conversation. It wasn’t until we committed to writing a book that he felt comfortable sharing his past.

My grandfather’s book, You Can’t Fall Off the Floor, was ultimately published by Simon & Schuster in 2018. It became a bestseller in the Entertainment genre and received rave reviews, but the book did much more than produce positive feedback. It brought my family together in a way that I could have never anticipated. Aunts, uncles, and distant cousins all reached out to me, explaining that they never knew the man at the center of our family until they read the book. I couldn’t help but ask myself what would have happened to all of my grandfather’s stories if we hadn’t taken the initiative of writing a book together.

This experience inspired me to help others connect with their friends and families through the art of storytelling. Two years later, I’ve helped dozens of people preserve their legacies with Storyflect.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The concept of making memoirs more easily accessible may sound simple, but it has its share of challenges. Our goal is to make memoirs and authentic reflections accessible to our community. That means providing premium writing at a reasonable price. Luckily, our method of finding and capturing stories on the page has allowed us to drive down costs without compromising on quality.

It’s also a challenge to prevent clients from feeling intimidated by the gravity of a book. We hear a common sentiment at the beginning of a client’s memoir journey: “it’s impossible to fit my entire life between two covers.” We agree! Our goal is not to capture a life in sum but to preserve poignant “slices of life.” We’re all about honing in on the core memories and experiences that reflect who we are.

COVID has been a major curveball as well. Our business model is focused on providing one-on-one interviews, which wasn’t a possibility when the world went into lockdown. VC technology proved to be a vital tool in allowing us to continue our mission.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Storyflect is a one-stop shop for families who want to capture their stories. Through one-on-one interviews, premium ghostwriting, and custom book design, we capture people’s stories between two covers. The result is a timeless keepsake that can stand the tests of time. Our goal is to make it easier than ever to preserve our pasts.

We’re getting ready to launch an exciting new product that lets clients pair ghostwritten stories to custom photo albums. This offering will allow our clients to preserve the stories behind our favorite photos.

Aside from our basic packages, we offer editorial services and publishing counsel. If you have a story, we’re equipped to help you share it with the world.

There really isn’t anything like Storyflect out there. We do all of the heavy lifting when it comes to writing a book that reflects an individual’s life story. That includes everything from interviewing, to photo design, to printing. All our clients need to bring to the table is a willingness to share their stories with our team of qualified writers.

We take pride in cementing legacies and bringing people together through storytelling. We have five main pillars that exemplify our values:

1) You’re the author of your story.
2) Boring stories don’t exist.
3) One size doesn’t fit all.
4) Moments beat summaries.
5) Your words are meant to be read.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I learn something new with every client that I meet. Every story has a piece of wisdom that leaves an imprint on me, and I feel truly lucky to absorb it all with every book that I shepherd into print.

One of the most valuable lessons throughout my ghostwriting career has been the importance of authenticity. A piece of writing can be beautiful and technically sound, but it isn’t valuable unless it reflects the tone and personality of the individual. That means capturing a client’s vocabulary, sense of humor, and general mode of communication. My goal is to saturate every piece of writing with its author’s identity.
