Inspiring Conversations with Michael Cartagena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Cartagena.

Hi Michael, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in South Los Angeles to an amazing family that has been nothing but supportive of my visions and my life experiences. Early on during my adolescent, I was diagnosed with recurring granulation tissue in my throat, on my vocal cords, specifically. This would later factor to alter my path in life and my beginning to execute my visions. The granulation tissue poised a threat to my airway and voice, KTP laser surgeries clearing my throat became a regular plot in my schedule growing up. I embraced the vision of becoming a medical professional, the frequent and extensive visits to UCLA Ronald Reagan made it feel like it was home for me. The tissue continuously grows, there is no cure for my condition. Many treatments have proved to be counterproductive.

There’s much in between but we all experience struggles in life. After graduating from Fairfax High School, I was a supervisor for Starbucks, worked at Trader Joe’s, got into the nursing field before I obtained my real estate license. I would complete my real estate course during work free time. As 2020 approached, I continued to push my undergraduate degree while working in the nursing field. I continued to connect with as many patients as possible knowing what it is like to be a patient myself. In November of 2020, I caught an infection from a transmission source within the nursing care facilities I was working in.

The experience would push me to turn away from my nursing care opportunities. This is when I began my career in real estate. The time came when my specialist explained that I would not be allowed or be prioritized as the operating rooms would only be for all the respiratory issue patients. That would increase my transmission of exposure to the virus. I was advised to be trached (tracheostomy) again during January of 2021, my specialist was able to perform a last KTP laser treatment before COVID closed the doors for many.

After a few days to heal from the pain and being uncomfortable, I completed my real estate course exams to begin the process of submitting my application to the state for my state exam approval. I passed my exam and began to look for open positions to join a real estate brokerage that provides mentoring for agents coming into the field. I joined Keller Williams as the mainstream platform provides agents tools that prepare you for the real estate field.  I am thankful for the opportunity and feedback Keller Williams ingrained in me to be successful in the field. The real estate industry has been a different experience from the past I share. When I think back on everything I’ve been through, I connect why all my experiences would be related to the marathon I’m pushing now. In the next couple of weeks, I will be making a transition in the next couple days as I embrace my real estate business and group. I will continue my marathon and reflect on the opportunities despite many obstacles.

I will be growing The Michael Cartagena Group company beyond residential real estate. I am the director of property acquisitions and dispositions for the National Organization of Cannabis Compliance. The Michael Cartagena Group assist in residential estate representation, commercial acquisitions and dispositions, cannabis compliance, cannabis business advocacy, complaint real estate acquisitions, short and foreclosure estate sales, trust and probate estate sales, property management, luxury estates, concierge, financing through public and private financiers available for any and all your visions. I am grateful for all of the opportunities and obstacles that have chiseled me to the person I am today. We don’t get a practice life on this pursuit of happiness of ours. I look forward to meeting you and your visions.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, none of this at all has been a smooth road. I don’t think we could ever be prepared for life’s obstacles or even as prepared. I always thought that being prepared would make things easier, but you realize you don’t know what is coming and how. The toughest road of the struggle and push was becoming mentally strong. People will always have an opinion or comment that has no business with them on a personal aspect. Days feel so long when we keep our head down. We only get one chance at this life to not be looking forward to tomorrow. You can struggle so hard, yet someone will always have an opinion of what they haven’t pushed for. We don’t owe anyone anything.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
