Inspiring Conversations with Marissa Hutter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Hutter.

Hi Marissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
About fifteen years ago – as a restless, heartbroken twenty-something — my journey to Ayurveda began inside a healer’s apartment in Venice, California.

Through my tears, I managed to relate my sob story, and he responded with a simple suggestion that changed everything.

He said I should wake up feeling rested and rejuvenated.

I remember just staring at him.

I had been struggling with fatigue. Something definitely felt wrong, I was a first-year elementary school teacher and blamed my fatigue on my hectic work schedule. Everyone around me felt overworked and exhausted. We all relied on coffee to get through the day. I thought that’s what it meant to be an adult and have a career. I didn’t realize my body was trying to communicate a deeper message. It was screaming for help. Exhaustion was so normal to me that I hadn’t even considered that there might be an alternative.

After meeting with the healer, I became fascinated with feeling well. It launched me on a path to well-being that I am still walking to this day.

I’ve had so many experiences throughout my life of symptoms that doctors struggled to diagnose. Antibiotics and hormonal birth control were the blanket solution, and when they didn’t work, they prescribed more. I became particularly frustrated about the lack of research and understanding around women’s health in western medicine. I didn’t want another band-aid. I wanted to truly heal.

As I delved deeper and deeper into the root of my physical issues over the past few years, layers of stored emotions began to surface. Finally, paying attention to my body has revealed an inextricable link between my emotional and mental health and the physical symptoms I was experiencing. It became clear to me that real healing requires a lot more than popping pills. It requires a healthy lifestyle; an integration of mind, body and spirit.

Discovering what this insight means in practice has been a roundabout journey spanning many healers, countries, treatments, cleanses, detoxes…you name it. But my search for a comprehensive approach to health eventually brought me to Ayurveda, an oasis of common sense in woo woo land. What can I say…it was in the stars.

I’ve taken my training in integrative health, energy work, yoga, and Ayurveda and put it into my Ayurveda Nutrition + Lifestyle programs that I offer to those who are embarking on their own journey into core healing. It’s immensely gratifying to know that my clients don’t have to be on their own, struggling blindly against the grain, like I did. Health is the ultimate freedom and my greatest wish for the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t call it smooth. More like wild. Professionally, the transition from elementary school teacher to entrepreneur was nothing like I expected. My first attempt to help others onto a path toward lasting health was a summer wellness camp for teens. This project proved to be incredibly ambitious for my business partner and I, who lacked start-up capital. Many lessons were learned and many dollars were spent, and the summer camp never quite made it off the ground.

As for my personal health journey, I have found my voice by going against the grain of our overly medicated society and by learning to trust my intuition and advocate for my health. It hasn’t been easy, especially when decisions I know are the right ones for my health have led me down a lonely path. I’ve had messy, frustrating, and transcendent experiences throughout my healing journey…hives that lasted a year, recurring UTI infections, numbness in my limbs, and night sweats.

It took a long time and several career changes to get to where I am today. But in hindsight, they were all necessary stepping stones that have led me to bring Ayurveda and yoga into New Heights, a low-income charter school in LA where I began my teaching career, and now to adults who are sick and tired of quick fixes with no longevity. Ayurveda has transformed my health and I’m grateful every day to share this ancient wisdom with others.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an Ayurvedic Wellness coach, I help people overcome digestive issues, fatigue, anxiety, and hormonal imbalances through holistic health coaching and the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda. The practice of Ayurveda dates back more than 5,000 years in India and is possibly the oldest health care system in the world.

Through Ayurveda, I help people think outside the limitations of society’s conventional wisdom around health. For example, society tells women that it’s normal to experience painful symptoms before and during our cycle and to have low thyroid, high stress, brain fog, and even autoimmune conditions. I help people understand that what is common is not necessarily normal and that we are meant to experience optimal health.

We live in a society of diet culture that often overlooks the big picture. Through my practice, I highlight Ayurveda’s practical, simple, and time-tested approach to health. It has taught me to investigate the entire person and given me the tools to understand each person’s unique body constitution. Through personalized coaching packages, seasonal cleanses and wellness retreats, my practice offers customized support to help the body regain its natural balance.
