Inspiring Conversations with Kay Qiao of Dear Ocean

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Qiao.

Hi Kay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I came to LA for a one-year filmmaking program in 2019. I was planning on only staying in this country for 1-2 years but ended up changing to a Master’s degree, now I have been living in this country for more than three years.

I studied Entertainment Law and I realized that it’s fairly handy to register a business in LA. Since I’ve always been dreaming of making films and create art as my career, I decided to register my own film production company.

I registered with my company before graduating, then I started renting an office space earlier in January this year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing comes easy, especially when you start something from scratch. Luckily, I have some clients who are also my friends. They gave me their projects to work on and helped me to start running the business.

But because I was doing it all by myself, I had to sacrifice my personal time to provide a better service. When the client wasn’t satisfied with the work that the staff I hired to do, I had to take over the job and work until my client was happy.

And because of my lack of experience, I spent lots of unnecessary money for a film project. But I keep telling myself that any problems that can be solved by money are not problems.

We’ve been impressed with Dear Ocean LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Dear Ocean is a film production company. We produce fashion photoshoots and videos, short films, music videos and feature films. We also have lighting equipment and camera lenses for rental.

I’m very proud of the outcome we made for the past few projects. Also, I’m very confident in my team, from producer to cinematographer to makeup artist. We have a strong team to support the client’s visions and our service.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
The first step is always the hardest. Let’s grow together and make magic happen.
