Inspiring Conversations with Katrina Tabares of Shop Stay Golden

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Tabares.

Hi Katrina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I never really knew what kind of career I wanted; however, I did always lean towards either being a Veterinarian or a Nurse. Straight out of high school, I went to a Vocational School to become a Medical Assistant. I got my first MA job about four months after completing the program. After years of being a Medical Assistant, I decided to go back to school to do my Pre-requisites and to eventually get into the Nursing Program. During that time, I found myself unhappy with working at my MA job. I decided to leave my job of 6 years & started working as a Server/Bartender (I had no experience at all) this gave me more flexibility with my schedule & school. Then, COVID hit. Since my restaurant job closed, quarantine allowed me to really sit back & think about what I really wanted to do with my life. Whenever someone asked me about my goals or dreams, I would always say that I wanted to have my own business and be my own boss. I was just too afraid to actually do it. When I was working at my MA job, I would start doing research and brainstorming, but then I would just give up.

Since I was stuck at home due to the pandemic, I had no excuse. I started doing a lot of research daily. I became so intrigued, and I could not help but think how amazing it would be to finally start a business. I will never forget the feeling of when I received my first batch of inventory, which was in July 2020. I was so excited! I immediately started creating content and prepackaging them. I would spend the whole day/days figuring out what I needed to start a small business. So, on November 3rd, 2020 I launched my jewelry business! I was also able to get into a Pop Up the first month I launched, and I continued to get into more! Fast forward to today, I am still currently enrolled in school and I have a new Bartending job. I do find it hard at times to manage my business, personal life, my me time, social media accounts, and all of the above; yet, it has been such a beautiful journey so far. It’s mind-blowing that I just celebrated my one year Anniversary of Shop Stay Golden & I am so grateful for the amount of love & support I continue to get!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a small business is definitely not a walk in the park, but it’s not impossible! All the ups cancel the downs. I, for one do not have any experience when it comes to business. Everything I know now all came from days of doing research. Till this day, I am still learning. I am constantly learning new things about running a small business. My struggles when it comes to my small business is being consistent with creating content; meanwhile, juggling school, my personal life, my job, & whatever life throws at me! Also, getting sales is not easy. I have gone weeks without getting a sale. I do my best to not get discouraged and I know that I am not the only small business owner that is experiencing this. It sometimes just takes time to build your brand. I remind myself that I have to be patient and to just keep pushing and believing in myself. But without any challenges or obstacles, I would not be able to learn and grow from them. They have taught me so much and they have helped me grow as a person. I feel empowered by it all!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I own a jewelry business called Shop Stay Golden (Instagram @shopstaygolden_). I chose to name my business Shop Stay Golden because the phrase “Stay Golden” has stuck to me for years (I also have it tattooed on me). To me, it means to Always Stay True to Yourself, no matter what! My shop includes jewelry that is 925 Sterling Silver or 18k Gold Plated Stainless Steel, and I have options of either Gold or Silver. I decided to have both options of Gold or Silver because everyone has their own taste when it comes to jewelry. Before I started my jewelry business, I would mostly always wear silver. After starting my jewelry business, you will catch me wearing gold all the time! I do go back and forth with them, just depending what goes better with my outfit. The best part of having a jewelry business is the endless options I have! I really love the idea that jewelry and accessories can complete the whole look. I also have other accessories like sunglasses, shoelace buckles, tote bags, & purses. My shop is all about being affordable but trendy! I want my customers to be able to wear our jewelry that is not only affordable but also of amazing quality. I have also based my theme in the color pink (my favorite color). When customers order from my shop, the poly mailer, thank you card, business card, sticker, jewelry cloth, & jewelry bag…will all be pink! I always get so many compliments of my packaging, and that makes me so happy! I also throw in a free pink scrunchie and of course, a discount code for their next purchase.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I would say that my biggest supporters have been my boyfriend & his mom! My boyfriend has always been the one to push me whenever I started doubting myself in anything. He has helped me get back into school, he has motivated me to start my business, he throws ideas at me to help with my business, he helps with any photography that I need, and so much more. He, too started his own small business around the same time I did! (@soruffxsostuffed) So it’s been an amazing journey to see each other grow our businesses. His mom has been so supportive since the day I have met her. She was the first one to place an order when my website went live & she was literally sitting in the other room from me! She pretty much has every piece of jewelry from my shop & she is always wearing them!
