Inspiring Conversations with Dillena Okray of Lalaglamtique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dillena Okray.

Hi Dillena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For many people, being an entrepreneur was a goal in life to which they knew they wanted to achieve. For me, this was not at all the case. Don’t get me wrong, I was only nine years old making handmade jewelry. I would make bracelets, necklaces and earrings. I would advertise all my products to my mother’s friends and they’d all support. I used to always go to Downtown Los Angeles to buy all my supplies. Yes, I’m born and raised in Los Angeles. I even went into selling candy in high school at Hamilton high school to make money. Of course, I didn’t take it as seriously as I should have though. I didn’t believe that I was really capable of being an Entrepreneur because I was so young. Before I decided to actually take owning my own business seriously, I had a plan to complete college with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

What made me decide to start my own business while being a full-time student? My beautiful mother. She’s been her own boss since the age of nineteen as a licensed cosmetologist. She’s been the biggest supporter and role model in my life. In fact, Lalaglamtique wasn’t my first real business. My first business was a cosmetic business called “Itsthatlala”. My mom was always talking to me about how I could make lip-gloss into a business because that’s how much I loved lip-gloss. I started that business in 2019 and decided to part ways in the beginning of 2021. That was an emotional decision for me because that was my first everything. In the end, I knew it was the best thing I could have done because I found my true love in fashion. People would always compliment what I wore when I was out and about. Once I received that type of feedback, I knew it was my calling. Especially because if anyone knows me, they know I love dressing up and styling people. Being able to make someone else feel good about themselves, always makes me happy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. There were moments that I was doing well with my business. Then, there were moments where business wasn’t good. I never complained because every small business isn’t going to just be perfect from the start. It takes time, consistency and patience. Which is why I just continued to push despite all the ups and downs. Throughout this journey, I’ve also battled with depression trying to get through school, being an Entrepreneur and much more. It was difficult because I felt like I wasn’t pushing myself to the levels that I knew I could due to my personal battles. What I’m proud of myself for though is the fact that I never give up. I always continue to be active with my business and pour my all into it. Even while giving myself that time to decompress and be in tune with my emotions.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lalaglamtique?
Lalaglamtique is an online women’s boutique. I know the name Lalaglamtique is always a surprise to people that come across our page. What does the name mean or come from? It’s dedicated to my mother. I always call her Lala, so I wanted to incorporate her in this journey and dedicate it to her. My goal for Lalaglamtique is for it to bring out the classy style in women. Which is why we always say, “For the boss babes with a plan” when it comes to talking about our business. We want people to feel comfortable in knowing you can feel beautiful in simplicity. We are known for having the cute, trendy, good quality and affordable prices on clothes. We have dresses, two-piece sets, jumpsuits, tops and much more. We set apart from others because we make our customers feel like they are our friends. We communicate in a respectful manner with all customers and show love to them through social media. This journey has been a blessing. The feedback we receive on our boutique is truly amazing. We do plan on expanding into having pop-up shops as well. We want people to be able to see our clothes up close and personal. Stay on the look for any upcoming events we have on our Instagram page.

What’s next?
The future is unpredictable, but I believe being prepared and making plans for the future is worth it. I am a college student and intend on getting my Ph.D. in Psychology. Opening my own practice has been my goal with that and being a Marriage and Family therapist. Apart from my school goals, I want to be able to take my business to another level. I want to open up my own storefront or possibly have a boutique van that I can use for pop-up shops. Those two-business goals have been heavy on heart. I know it won’t be easy, but I believe in myself. Aside from my career goals, I do want my own non-profit in the future for young children. I want to be able to help the kids under me when it comes to the real world. By teaching them about generational wealth, breaking generational curses and just being the outlet, they may need.
