Inspiring Conversations with Dennis Hsii & Vivian Yoon of Highland Premiere

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Hsii & Vivian Yoon.

Hi Dennis & Vivian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We co-founded Highland Premiere based on our passion for supporting and elevating our community.

Vivian Yoon: Growing up as a Korean American kid in LA, I had experienced the spectrum of life from both the East and West sides of town. We first lived in Koreatown until my family moved us to Beverly Hills to access better education.

I have a deep love of this city and strive to understand the fabric of Southern California as it evolves. I’ve experienced changing neighborhoods and always want to learn about what my community cares about. These experiences molded me into the person I am today and helps me understand my clients’ core needs.

My interest in real estate began when I was young. My mother was an interior designer and a lighting architect. She would bring me to work with her, and I would be hanging around in celebrity homes and mega projects. I got my first glimpse of the real estate business by shadowing her, and she was my first inspiration.

In my first job out of college, I went to work for a prominent commercial real estate investment firm that managed billions of dollars in assets throughout Los Angeles County and the San Francisco Bay area.

I transitioned to a marketing position for a luxury real estate company named Christie’s, an art auction house. I worked on auctioning off homes with their property division, primarily trophy bespoke properties. Christie’s was my doorway into the luxury property market.

After Christie’s, I went to work for a boutique real estate investment company where I was the broker of record for their residential arm; and that is where I met Dennis. My career journey is woven in real estate, and I’m proud of the relationships I’ve built with our clients.

Dennis Hsii: I was born in Virginia and grew up in Maryland; I lived in the Washington, DC area for the first half of my life. I studied engineering in college and afterwards was offered a three-month contract to move across the country to work in Orange County as a software consultant. It was initially supposed to be a three-month stint only, but the contract kept getting extended and it became harder for me to leave California each time. I worked on several additional IT projects and relocated to Los Angeles, all the while focused on trying to purchase my first home and being fascinated with the high-priced real estate market of Southern California.

I always had a passion for real estate. As a child, I would spend weekends accompanying my mom to open houses. My first home purchase was when I was 28 years old when the housing market was on the way down — I was lucky enough to get a foreclosure in Playa Vista.

Following the 2008 recession, my family was interested in buying and managing rental properties, and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to invest in homes with them. This experience of managing properties and negotiating deals led me to a career in real estate sales and becoming a real estate broker here in Los Angeles.

After earning my MBA in 2010, I made the complete career shift from Information Technology to Real Estate, which better suits my personality, work ethic, and entrepreneurial spirit. In real estate, I can help other individuals more directly than I can in IT, where I would be working mostly behind the scenes.

When Vivian and I decided to start our own company, we wanted to focus more on residential properties (vs. commercial) and help buyers get into their first home or move up into a larger home. We planned to connect our clients with residential homes for their enjoyment, a place to build their memories, and a place to grow their lives.

Both of us grew up listening to our moms’ harp on us about real estate. We’ve been educated about the real estate business our entire lives. It’s a gift our families gave us so that we could pursue our dreams. At Highland Premiere, we pride ourselves on treating our clients like our family. We look out for our family’s best interest and care for them like our own.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Real Estate is a fast-paced industry.

Before Dennis and I formed Highland Premiere, we were advised to follow a business model focused on volume and the number of deals. This model was not how we defined success.

As a result, we created our own Highland Premiere model and standard, which focuses on personalized and excellent service. We are proud of the trust we’ve built with our clients and the communities we serve. Trust is the foundation of Highland Premiere, and it’s why we maintain a strong brand reputation.

As our client base and business grew, we needed to develop a team mindfully. We’ve built a strong team that provides our clients with the best quality service with our business pillars.
