Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Nunes.
Ashley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am the owner of a childcare. I went through the process and received my licensed in 2019. I have always had a passion for helping children and wanted to work with them. My dream was originally to become a pediatrician, but God had other plans. I do believe I am still fulfilling my purpose of helping children. My family and friends, who are also childcare owners with more knowledge and experience, helped me with creating my contracts and donated items such as toys, tables and rugs to set up my space. I started off with two kids in my first year while also working a part-time job. I was just praying that my daycare would grow. Here we are three years later in 2022 and my business is now flourishing. Words cannot express how proud I am of myself. It all started as a thought. By keeping the faith, it is now a reality. I stayed consistent even when I did not know how everything would turn out, which was the key to my success. I kept advertising myself on social media and passed out flyers about my business. I genuinely believe this would not have happened without God and my mom keeping me encouraged and being by my side every step of the way. I believe that I am currently fulfilling my purpose in life and eventually I would love to open a childcare facility.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Childcare is no walk in the park. I definitely had some roadblocks and struggles with getting started. Primarily, enrolling children when there were no other children enrolled at my facility was the biggest struggle. Also, not a lot of parents trusted a young provider who is a stranger to them, with no children herself, to care for their child for an entire day. Eventually, two parents trusted me, and I am grateful for them because that is when my business began to grow. Another struggle I had was with lesson plans. I did not know exactly how to produce different learning materials which are age-appropriate for each child. So, this took some time to get used to and I had to plan overnight what I wanted to do. I turned to many resources such as Pinterest, Google, YouTube, and materials from other childcare providers to get things going. I began to get in touch with my creative side and add my own twist to things. Teamwork really does make a dream work! I had to learn that a delay is not a denial just because something is not happening within your timing does not mean it will not happen at all. We must stay patient.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nunes Family Child Care?
As a young provider, it is easy for me to relate and connect with the children in my care, but I am also a role model and someone they respect. I am really a kid at heart so I believe anything that I would enjoy doing, the kids will as well. During our summer break, I try my best to take them on as many field trips as possible and throw different themed parties. I communicate with my parents on social media because nowadays, that is what many of us use throughout the day. They can see our arts and crafts, playtime, lunchtime, naptime, etc. A lot goes into our daily schedule. We even have a daycare pet which is a tortoise named Rocket. The kids get to pet and feed her, and they love it. Just being the young creative person that I am and the passion I have to grow into one of the greatest childcare providers that I know I can be is what I feel sets me apart from other providers. I do not want to just watch children for people, I want to provide children with fun and educational experiences that they can take with them throughout their lives.
I am proud to be an entrepreneur, waking up every day in my own environment, doing what I love is a blessing. All of my hard work and dedication is being displayed. I thank God each year believing in the impossible, trusting and keeping my faith is what made it happen. Philippians 4:13. This is me Ashley She E.O of Nunes a family Child Care.
What matters most to you?
In my childcare, the children matter to me the most. I love them like I created them. I will protect them, teach them and ensure they are happy. The connections I have with them are what matters the most because at the end of the day my children will always remember the joy that I, Miss Ashley, brought to them. Every one of my children has a different personality. They are all unique. Some of them need catering to more than others but that is for me to distinguish. What I do matters to them because sometimes they do not get to hear the “I love you” in the mornings to carry them through the day “you are smart,” “your shirt is cool” or a simple “let me have a hug.” The little things matter the most to children and seeing a smile on their faces keeps a smile on mine. None the less, my parents matter as well. Knowing that I can support them by watching over their children and keeping them safe the way they would while they are away brings me joy.
