Inspiring Conversations with Tanya Linette Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Linette Smith.

Hi Tanya , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my career as an actress. I had a very difficult upbringing and acting was my escape. I did school plays which kept me in school and out of trouble. As I grew older, I realized that I loved acting and that it wasn’t just a place to hide. I didn’t need it for safety any longer. My upbringing helped me. I experienced so many things at such a young age that has shaped me into a strong and compassionate woman. I never thought I would be a coach. I had an accident which caused stage fright. I had been coaching my friends successfully for fun. Once they started booking work, I realized I was pretty good at it. I also loved it more than acting. I never thought that was possible. Once I realized that coaching was what I wanted to do… the stage fright went away.

I fell into writing and directing when clients asked me to create content for them…and now I am a filmmaker as well. It has been a crazy ride. I am exhausted most days from hours of creating and coaching. What a great reason to be exhausted. I feel very lucky.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it was smooth. I felt very unsafe most of my life. I had way too much responsibility at too young of an age. In order to survive, I have been an extremely controlling person for most of my life. This helps with discipline but it makes me a very specific and demanding coach. I am not for everyone.

My biggest struggle is being ok when the shit hits the fan . It makes me crazy when my student don’t see the magic I see in them. Its a hard industry to be in. You have to be strong. Super Hero strong. So, I guess sometimes I forget to just chill out.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Los Angeles based Acting Coach. I coach actors privately, in a classroom setting and on set. I also create content for artists to help expand their careers. By getting to know the person who is the artist, I am able to write in their voice so that they are at their most authentic. I have an IGTV show called Acting Out With Tanya. It is informational. I do what I do so that that kid in that tiny town somewhere can see a creative possibility. Acting is not difficult… being a human being is difficult. Its about finding the relationship between the two.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I am authentic and integrity is a big one for me. I believe people should do what they say they are going to do and if they can not they need to be very clear about why things have shifted. I am reliable and I think people see that. They trust me. That goes a long way. I also have a great Bullshit Meter. I know when I am off my game.
