Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Tam.
Hi Sylvia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a food entrepreneur, a mom to three kidpreneurs, and I have an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis back in 2011, but only my family knew my struggle with abdominal pains whenever I skipped a meal or ate the wrong foods. Up to now, I’ve been managing my symptoms through mindset, dietary changes, and family traditions in Chinese medicine. A few years ago, I was browsing online and realized how many people suffer from IBD and are taking long-term medication or had surgery. I felt so grateful for my health that I decided to help others with food sensitivities by starting Beviva Foods, a gut-friendly snack & lifestyle company centered around digestive health on the go. As a business traveler, I have a hard time finding suitable foods at airports and hotels, not to mention my dearly missed gluten-free cereal & dairy-free milk. So in 2018, I launched the first gluten & dairy-free cereal cup called PURPO® – an all-in-one purple sweet potato cereal on the go. Just add cold water to the cup for oat milk making it TSA friendly!
Now, of course, I wanted to test the product in the market so I did, and after another year of R&D, I developed an improved version that contains pre + probiotics, higher fiber content, no added sugar, and organic gluten-free oats. In late 2019 I re-launched the product along with a few first-of-its-kind products such as vacuum-fried chips and granola pouches to promote the highly-antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits of the purple sweet potato. While my mission is to help people with digestive sensitivities eat plant-based and allergen friendly on the hop, I am also passionate about helping families find their flow by promoting the three brain dynamic between our gut, head and heart. This year, I am excited to be working with wholistic health & mindfulness coach Christy Jones and hero intelligence teacher Tammy Vallieres to bring education and family coaching to our Beviva community.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As my favorite saying goes, “life’s not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s learning to dance in the rain”. It wasn’t easy when I decided to re-formulate PURPO and then having it take an extra year to complete. I was finally ready to showcase the new and improved version at the 2020 Natural Products Expo in Anaheim until just days before the show when it was canceled due to COVID-19. From there, all my usual in-person vegan fests, farmer markets and meetings with distributors, hotels and colleges all followed suit. Needless to say, we had to pivot and focus online by going to virtual events, collaborating with brands and influencers, doing podcast interviews, talking to our customers, and just doing the best we could, all while homeschooling my three children.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a hybrid food & education company, Beviva is unique for its innovative gut-focused food products and family entrepreneurial values. We strive to reach as many families as possible so they too can achieve optimal flow using our three brain dynamics process. Our PURPOse is to inspire families to eat with intention, discover their unique geniuses, and spread kindness through volunteering as a way of habit and lifestyle. Beviva also supports kids with IBD through Heather’s Mission, is a member of the American Culinary Federation, and co-founded of Aunua Heroes to advocate youth changemakers around the world.
Besides the fact that Beviva is named after my children, we are a completely family run brand because I believe in the benefits of entrepreneurship for youth. Benjamin (age 14) is a podcast host on his own but runs our email campaigns and website, Viani (11) is our recipe developer & event planner, and Vanessa (16) is our social media & community manager. Together with my husband Felix Wong, our family of five works at shows serving samples, talking to customers, and most recently going on podcasts too!
When it comes to food, my family and I focus a lot on our gut health because of how much it affects our flow and energy each day. Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, during the pandemic I attended a flow workshop and discovered my ikigai, which is a Japanese concept for life meaning or PURPOSE. I’ve been a teacher most of my life but it was always on the side. As I realized how much the world needed mentors for youth and how much people trusted me with their children, I revisited my snack business to transition to an integrative lifestyle model that nourishes the flow in our gut, head and heart. Additionally, we listened to our customers and launched our first family-sized products in response to families using our purple sweet potato granola and oat milk powder at home in smoothies, cereal bowls, oatmeal, desserts and more. Along with creating educational programs and collaborating with educators, I am so grateful to have the opportunity to work with amazing families in finding their flow.
