Inspiring Conversations with Sean Toohey of Toohey’s Ties

Hi Sean, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Before starting the company, I taught myself to tie a traditional bow tie. So when I got dressed up to go out, I was always the guy rocking the self-tie bow tie. I stumbled across a wooden bow tie online one day and I ordered it I then wore it out and got a ton of compliments so I decided to see if I can make one myself. Without previous woodworking skills, I bought everything I needed and created my first bow tie out of wood. Only knowing that I kept on making wood bow ties and also experimented with acrylic as well. I then started the bow tie company six years have passed by now. Xmas came around and my mom bought me a little 5 pound sewing machine I then taught myself how to sew and was able to move on to sewing cotton and leather and all other forms of fabric so I then starting making bow ties out of that as well. Since then, I have bought a bigger and better machine as well as creating pocket squares and custom shirt buttons as well. Everything is still hands made by me out of my house. Since Covid, I paused the bow tie company at the end of March and got into making masks as well. So that has been fun and a new avenue to go down during this time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road is always filled with speed bumps. In the beginning, unbeknownst to me the first bow tie I bought was sent to me crookedly cut and that is what I traced out to create my first bow tie. This was corrected once the error was found. Sewing was more of a learning curve than a struggle but when your tired threading that needle is definitely a struggle.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The bow ties and accessories are hands made to order in the USA. My company makes bow ties pocket squares custom shirt buttons and cufflinks. I’m known for my bow ties what set me apart from the rest is every piece is hand made by me with my love and energy going into each item. I’m most proud of brand-wise of who I’ve been able to work with professionally and where my stuff can be seen (i.e., the magic castle in Hollywood, Vueve Cliquot). I want the readers to know I’m ready to take their style to the next level and make them look their best when they show up.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Stick with it and don’t give up! When you find your passion, it never works fail hard because failing will show you what you did wrong and to not make that same mistake twice.
