Inspiring Conversations with Kimberly Rios of Kim & Cloth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Rios.

Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you for having me! I’m honored to share my story with you. I’m the founder and curator of Kim & Cloth. I’m a pediatric speech therapist by day and novel entrepreneur 24/7. I launched my online boutique December of 2020, well into the most transformative year for most of us. I love my career. It’s a gift working with children who have neurological differences and being a part of their growth. However, transitioning from in-person therapy to virtual sessions and hanging on a very dull creative thread, I felt like I was losing my autonomy and sense of self-direction. I’ve always been a goal setter and one who loved the feeling of accomplishing things I had set my mind to. But I was losing myself… I wanted to reignite that spark of waking up and wanting to jump out of bed to work on a goal. I wanted to express my creativity in a new way, and I knew it was time to challenge myself. I had this dream of starting my business and nourishing a brand. Flickers of ideas for it here and there sparked while in college, but I knew as a first-generation Latina college student I had other priorities at the time. So, I completed my education. Two bachelor’s degrees, five years into my career, and many lessons learned later, I decided to quiet the doubts, let go of the fear, and dive into my own business. I was at L.A’s Fashion District sourcing for my family in Guadalajara, Jalisco who sell clothes when I finally decided to go for it. I could envision the styles I would select to carry, the vibe I wanted to create, and the high quality I knew I could offer. Trends come and go but my goal when envisioning my brand was to hand-select pieces with distinct and exceptional quality at a competitive price… most of all, pieces that spoke to me and I felt close to my heart.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As with anything new, of course there have been learning curves. I didn’t go to school for business. So inevitably, starting from scratch was the most intimidating thing. The legal stuff, marketing, finance, logistics, brand identity, creating, time management… the list goes on. Thankfully, I am blessed with an amazing support system and have had the pleasure of connecting with so many new faces in my community (and across the country!) that are extremely encouraging and supportive.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am extremely happy and humbled by the growth Kim & Cloth has made since launching four months ago. We pride ourselves in quality fabrics and comfort because getting up to get dressed is something we should feel excited for! Being the highlight of your wardrobe is truly what we aim for. We have recently had the pleasure of having our first pop-up shop and gaining so many new connections and overwhelming support we are forever grateful for. I am planning many things for the future of Kim & Cloth- collaborations, more pop-up shops, community outreach programs, offering plus-size selections, and growing our space. Because we are a small business, we pride ourselves in the little details. Our small scale allows us the time and capacity to create an intimate experience with our customers– from customizing our hand-written tags, personalizing our thank you notes for packaging, and building strong client relationships, we truly want to make your day when you receive a package from us. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing how our pieces are styled and worn by many, each uniquely made into their own.

What matters most to you? Why?
Connecting with other women and creating a community with our brand! I see closet staples and favorites like a reliable friend, something you can trust that will be with you throughout the day and not fail you: comfortable, flattering, and something that compliments you. I think ladies know what I’m talking about- those pieces in your closet you just know fit right, they make you feel good, and you don’t have to worry about. They just flow with you. You can go on about your day, complete your tasks, work on your goals, and feel GREAT in the fabric that is clothing you. I think that trust and connection is a love language understood world-wide.
