Inspiring Conversations with Jaila Caple of Top Tier Clothing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaila Caple.

Jaila, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always been super passionate about fashion, sneakers, and the whole streetwear culture. I really enjoy being creative and putting different outfits together. People always comment on my style and how they like the way I dress, so that’s really what sparked the idea of creating my own clothing brand. The thought of being able to use my creativity and make clothes for others to be able to embrace their own style really motivated me to start. I announced that I was starting my own clothing brand on Instagram on January 13, 2021. The amount of love and support I received was insane. I received over 100 followers on (the official Instagram) in one day which was super overwhelming, and it made me even more excited for the first drop. My first drop was on January 31st and it consisted of three hoodies in Black, White, and Baby Blue. I named it the “TOP TIER OG Hoodie” and designed the colorful “Top Tier” logo myself. I was shocked to have received so many orders to be a small business just starting up. Not only have I shipped throughout the U.S., but I have also shipped to Canada as well! Within that short time, I dropped a hoodie for Valentine’s Day and named it the “LUV U Limited Edition Hoodie”. I made it only available for the month of February and I designed that one as well. It’s a great feeling to know that people truly rock with your business and your brand and I can’t wait for the future drops I have in store!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say the most challenging part for me right now is the wait time between receiving orders. The most convenient way to get the hoodies made are in bulk, so it’s best to accumulate multiple orders and get them all made at the same time. The only downfall with that is that you don’t want to keep customers waiting too long for their order to be shipped out. Luckily, I haven’t had too much trouble with this so far. I’m also a full-time college student and I work part-time. It’s hard to plan a balanced schedule that includes all of your responsibilities, but I feel as though I am handling it pretty well. Another struggle would be getting my brand out there. Social media makes it super easy to get noticed, but it’s also all about resources, connections, and people you know in order to really boost your brand. Marketing also plays a huge factor in the presence of your brand and whether or not people will actually browse through your Instagram page or keep scrolling past it. In my opinion, the most stressful part of having your own clothing brand is the pressure of making sure you create clothes that people will enjoy and will want to purchase.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Top Tier Clothing is a clothing brand that specializes in streetwear. As of right now, I sell hoodies, but I plan on expanding and selling t-shirts, sweatpants, etc. I’ve seen and heard a lot of people use the term “top tier” on social media and I felt like if people were using the term, they would also want to wear it on their clothes. The motto of the brand is “It doesn’t get any better than this.” What sets Top Tier Clothing apart from others is my signature “TOP TIER OG Hoodie”. The colorful, fuzzy chenille lettering really stands out and that is what people associate the brand with. I wanted to make sure that the first hoodie I dropped was super eye-catching and bold so that people know to expect nothing but heat from me. Along with the outpour of support I’ve received so far, I’m most proud of the fact that I am already prepared for future drops. Because I am so passionate about my brand, I enjoy using my creativity to make clothes and come up with designs in my free time. I have mock-ups already designed and ready to be made; all I have to do is set a date for the drops. To stay updated about future drops, make sure to follow on Instagram. I post every time a new drop is about to come out and the exact date and time it will be dropping. I also add a countdown to the Instagram story so that people can set reminders about the drops. I’m very excited for the future of Top Tier Clothing and my biggest goal is to stand out and make clothes that people can truly enjoy and embrace their own style in.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My first drop was in January, so I am just starting out as well. But, if I had to give advice to someone else, I would say not to give up. If this is something you are truly passionate about, it’s always best to stay consistent. Don’t let the competition, income, or any obstacles prevent you from achieving your dreams as an entrepreneur. When I first started, I wish I knew how difficult it was going to be to maintain a balanced schedule with school, work, and the brand. I also wish I knew how stressful it is to make a profit right in the beginning. Times definitely do get rough, but as long as you stay motivated and focused, everything will work out in the end.
