Inspiring Conversations with Donna Hadjikhani of DeltaSwell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Hadjikhani.

Hi Donna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, my school holidays were spent working on building sites with my father who was a General Contractor (and professional magician). His dream was always that I would go into the family business and we would work together designing and remodeling houses. But as long as I could remember, I wanted to be an Art Historian and work in the arts. So I got a BA in Art History and a Masters in Arts Management and traveled around the world, settling in New Zealand.

While in New Zealand, I met a woman who was a Feng Shui consultant with a Feng Shui school. She let me take her classes in exchange for helping her write and edit books on the subject. Over time, I became a consultant myself and for years, while working various corporate jobs, I would “Feng Shui” my friends’ and families’ lives and houses.

It was here that my passion for and career in interior design and decorating began and I could hear my father’s voice in this calling. I guess you can say it was my destiny and in 2010, I started DeltaSwell as a full-service interior design studio.

While working on a Topanga Canyon, Frank Lloyd Wright house decorating project, I hired a woman, 40 years in the window treatment business, to help me produce some drapery and cushions for the house. We hit it off and by the time the Topanga project was installed, I was working for her full time, running her business, and taking on 80% of her clients. Three years later, she was ready to retire and I bought the business from her.

As the principal at DeltaSwell, I apply my keen eye and intuition to elevate and transform interior design for the Los Angeles lifestyle – combining an expertise in custom window treatments, pillows, bedding, upholstery, custom furnishings, and fine art consulting with a passion for design trends and a special knowledge of color, textures, and textiles.

The magic happens as I imbue my clients’ surroundings with a style that reflects their personality and nurtures their senses, creating spaces that are extensions of their rich inner life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
After talking about buying the business for three years and drawing up legal documents with an offer, the woman I worked for decided she was not ready to sell. I felt like I was left at the altar.

I decided the only thing left for me to do was to leave her business and open a new design studio on my own. Less than a year later, she was finally ready and approached me with an offer to sell.

It was great being the one pursued and it resulted in a much better deal in the end.

We’ve been impressed with DeltaSwell, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I like to joke that I’m lucky I fell into the window treatment business because one thing is certain – every home or business everywhere in the world has windows.

The truth is, throughout my life I have been blessed with some incredible mentors who have generously taught and lead me through my journey and career. I am so grateful to them.

Over the last 11 years, I have built a successful, niche design business where I work not only with amazing homeowners on small projects but also on huge collaboration projects as a consultant to elite Los Angeles designers.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would definitely consider myself a risk taker. Perhaps I’m really good at trusting my instincts or maybe it’s my destiny.

From moving to New Zealand and back to LA to leaving a successful career in the corporate entertainment world so I can follow my passion and desire, I have been fearless. I realized early on when something is meant to be, there is very little true struggle in getting there.
