Inspiring Conversations with Danilo Batson of Spicy Green Book

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danilo Batson.

Hi Danilo, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Spicy Green Book started in June 2020. Originally we aimed to create a resource for others in the Los Angeles and Orange County area to find a Black-owned restaurant near them. We decided to hand curate this content for these restaurants as we began to build out the directory. Before we knew it, we had support coming in from just beyond Southern California and we have been working to cover as many states and metro areas as possible ever since.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We have been fortunate that support for our organization has continued to come in. Creating something like this is never easy but we have cultivated an amazing community that allows everyone to do their part to be impactful. Making sure we are properly using everyone’s donated time and talents to properly serve our community is what we constantly pursue.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Spicy Green Book?
WHAT WE DO Spicy Green Book provides a wide variety of professional services to Black-owned food and drink business owners. These include online marketing and advertising, content creation, photography and videography, business development education, and more.

We do this by getting to know these business owners, understanding their most pressing needs, and fulfilling those needs by pairing them with qualified professional volunteers. Our growing group of volunteers welcomes everyone who wants to spark positive change.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Most of the books I personally read are not directly related to business but in the realm of social justice and learning about the Black experience, they can serve as a great help.

One of my favorite books is by Ta-Nehisi Coates. He is probably my favorite author as well. I highly recommend his book, Between The World and Me.
