Hidden Gems: Meet Wendi Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendi Young.

Hi Wendi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I knew I wanted to do design since I was little – it’s honestly all I’ve ever aspired to do. Getting started, I worked for a number of firms in the design industry, and interestingly enough I never ever had a plan, but looking back on my career it’s as if I strategically had a plan and chose specific firms to facilitate my path. It all just happened actually. I’ve worked in model home firms, commercial, kitchen and bath firms and an architectural finishes studio. Where I got my very first start was in kitchen and bath design. One step at a time, one project at a time things continued to organically manifest and more opportunities presented themselves. I really just followed what I thought would be fun and ended up flying all over the country with a team of 7 designing homes all over; Arizona, Mexico, Hawaii, Montana, New York, etc.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like everything in life and business there have been challenges along the way, but I’ve always looked at the rough spots as part of evolving…it just comes with the territory. One being the learning curve that comes along with growing a team and would have to say the greatest challenge has been learning to say no and trusting my intuition whether that is with a new team member or potential client.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For over twenty-five years, Wendi Young Design has successfully executed hundreds of full-scale interior design projects. Our experienced team of six is well-educated in interior design, interior architecture, furniture design, project management, and finance. Our body of work is as diverse as the clients we represent and our team is proficient in creating a variety of styles, from formal to relaxed, old-world to contemporary, and are particularly talented in mixing authentic architectural detailing with unusual “found” objects. One of the biggest things we are known for, and most proud of, is being able to create any design style and infuse it with aesthetics authentic to the client. We believe design is not just about creating a pretty room but creating a room that evokes emotion. We believe a piece is not defined by its cost but by its style and that detail and authenticity are just as important as budgets and completion dates. We believe in challenging the status quo, in the power of the collective, and in working as a team. We believe in creating harmony between the way a person looks at life and the way they live it, and we believe a well-designed home is a portrait of those who live within.

What were you like growing up?
Interesting question! I was a curious, particular, introverted kid. I was especially aware of how spaces made me feel; whether that was in someone’s home, at a park or in a mall. I had a penchant for learning and LOVED school! Still to this day, I am a sponge for knowledge and new experiences.
