Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevon Sailor.
Hi Trevon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The idea of “Sailor’s Brew Coffee” was conceived in 2018 while sitting in my living room. Around the start of 2108, I began to have coffee industry focused conversations with a friend of mine named Kip Rolfe. Kip was a coffee veteran, having worked in the industry for over a decade, being a roaster as well a café owner. Through my conversations with Kip. I decided to research the cold brew industry. I initially was fascinated with cold brew and entertained the idea of starting a cold brew brand. When I think about it, I’ve been a coffee consumer since the age of 12. I remember buying cups of coffee from the liquor store on Lincoln Ave. and Altadena Dr. before catching the bus to Elliot Middle School (both located in Altadena). Once I reached high school, I would occasionally drink the Starbucks cold mocha drinks. It wasn’t until I enlisted into the United States Army that I started drinking black coffee. My experience with coffee for years was probably similar to that of many people, simply drinking it. For the longest time, I did not realize the depth of coffee and how intricate of a commodity it is. Once I began to research and explore the coffee industry in the beginning of 2018, I started to appreciate coffee for what it is.
In June of 2018, I took a trip to Columbia for almost three weeks. The trip was mainly vacation, however I was able to probe the coffee culture there and learn more about coffee itself. Once I returned home in July, I went to work on developing an all-encompassing coffee brand. Sailor’s Brew Coffee was born in November 2018 with a focus on single origin Ethiopian coffees, the original arabica coffees of the world. Aside from our Ethiopian coffees and luxury coffees, such as Jamaica Blue Mountain, our brand aspires to highlight true coffee culture. By that I mean, tasting and appreciating coffee for what it is, everything from how it was grown, the drying process used and of course, how it was roasted and brewed for your consumption. Sailor’s Brew Coffee focuses on positive life motivation. Life can be compared to the ocean, beautiful skylines with pleasant breezes but also stormy dark clouds with rough seas. Life is about riding the waves while staying true to your path despite what is currently in front of you. Thus our brand has a nautical theme with motivation for life, served in a bag of coffee beans. Today, we primarily sell our products through our website, “www.sailorsbrewcoffee.com” and are in the process of opening a physical retail platform.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some struggles that I initially encountered was learning the coffee industry, which is very vast. The coffee industry is known but only at the surface level. As with most things in life, if you want to know something, you have to go find the answers you are looking for. This is exactly what I did. I studied, researched and spoke to professionals in the industry while trying to get my brand up and running in a timely manner. Covid-19 created obstacles for us as with everyone else. Since our inception, we conducted numerous pop-up shops ranging from church events to restaurants, gyms and even furniture stores such as West Elm. The pandemic made us focus even more so on our online presence.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sailor’s Brew Coffee. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My brand, “Sailor’s Brew Coffee”, focuses on single origin Ethiopian coffees and luxury coffees such as Jamaica Blue Mountain. We stand for positive motivation as well as true coffee culture. We are advocates for appreciating and experiencing coffee for how it’s meant to be, no additives. This allows you to taste the coffee for what it is, without outside and artificial influence. Aside from organic Ethiopian coffees, we offer quality coffee-related products ranging from canisters to mugs. Beginning in February 2021, we will offer online coffee brewing/education courses to expand people’s knowledge and familiarity with coffee.

I advise anyone that has the courage to start a business to be a fiend for information regarding your respective field/business. You have to fall in love with the process and not quit.
