Hidden Gems: Meet Tami Farrell and Kimberly Naess of Madre Wine Co

Editor: Today we’d like to introduce you to Tami Farrell and Kimberly Naess. Hi Ladies! Kimberly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.

Kimberly: Madre was created by two busy moms in the midst of a pandemic. We share a love for wine. We are no sommeliers, but we do know a yummy wine from one that is a little cringe worthy. We created this brand with love. We want to be more than just a wine, but a community and safe space for women. Wine brings people together. It promotes conversation and togetherness. It’s an art and an experience.

Tami:
 Art really inspired our business. I was featured in a series by artist Rebecca Moses called “Stay at Home Sisters” during the pandemic lockdown. Rebecca created unique pieces of art featuring women from all around the world from all different walks of life. She created a community and connections in a time of isolation. In my piece, she painted an image of me finding the beauty in the chaos of parenting in the pandemic. The art now adores our Cabernet bottles. Rebecca would later feature Kimberly in her series and that art is now on our Chardonnay bottles. When looking to start a business, we combined our love for wine and our desire for community and connection. People often joke, “Mama needs wine”, but in reality what a Mom needs is a break. We wanted to create more than a delicious bottle of wine, but a community for women to feel supported and heard.

Kimberly: We started this company during a very vulnerable time. The world was shut down, schools were physically closed, cities had enforced curfews, riots were happening across the nation, and it was just chaotic and tough. We began this journey because of a mutual love for wine and a way for us to escape the daily tasks of being mom, wife, teacher, chef, housekeeper, gardener etc. for just an hour a day. One hour a day became two hours a day which then turned into lengthy phone calls, facetime and zoom sessions a few times a day to safely having social distancing dinners, meetings, and wine tastings. We have gone from friends to business partners to best friends to soul sisters. Partners in Wine for life!

Tami: We launched in early December of 2021 and do local delivery on Thursdays and ship to over 40 states. We just launched our wine club in July and offer monthly and quarterly shipments.

 I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?

Kimberly: Tami and I decided to dive into the wine industry 1 month into the pandemic. The world was shut down. Everyone was quarantining and not in the office. They were trying to manage their own lives plus their careers from home, so most people weren’t in the wineries or reachable for days to weeks. Also, because we are women who are not born into a family who has a successful vineyard or wine company, many did not take us seriously or give us the time of day. The wine industry is a very male-dominated place. We felt alone and judged at times but that only made us stronger and eager to learn and succeed.

Tami: When we got “no’s” we made our own paths. Ultimately deciding to self-fund and find creative ways to cover our expenses. I began restoring and flipping free furniture to help pay for our wine. Kimberly and I have personally labeled every bottle with the help of our supportive husbands and friends. We have had to sacrifice our time and resources to bring this business to life and continue to find creative ways to grow.

Editor: Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Tami: Madre Wine Co is a woman-owned and operated business. Only 13% of wineries in California have female owners. Our wine is tailored toward busy women like us. At the end of a day, the only break a woman may give herself is a glass of wine. We wanted to create a product that is both delicious and affordable with it easily available through direct to consumer marketing. Most importantly, we seek to not only offer great tasting wine but a community for women.

Kimberly: Our website offers recipes, blogs, and self-help articles. We also do live baking on our social media and started doing live events. Opening a bottle of wine opens up conversations, and we want to provide a safe space for community and connection.
Tami: When someone buys our wine, they are supporting our dream. As they open our beautifully packaged bottles they know that every detail was personalized by us.

We currently have a 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2017 Chardonnay available. Our wine club just launched with monthly and quarterly options available. The club gives huge savings, free shipping, as well as gifts and virtual meet-ups. Members save $120 + a year.

We also offer at-home tasting events, perfect for birthdays, bridal or baby showers. It’s a way to connect and have a special and more personal experience.
At the end of the day, we are two Moms who appreciate a delicious glass of wine. We don’t care if you pair it with the finest cheeses or the crust off your kid’s leftover grilled cheese. Life is crazy, chaotic, messy and beautiful. We believe life is meant to be enjoyed and so is our wine.

Tami: To us, success is built on failure, frustration, determination, perseverance and the ability to adapt. It’s not something that happens overnight, but rather a combination of time, hard work and discipline. Success is about finding happiness in whatever you do and never giving up.
