Hidden Gems: Meet Sarah Miles of Collectively

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Miles.

Hi Sarah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
With a background in pediatric health, I worked for several years as a nurse practitioner, feeding my passion to care for children in an inpatient and outpatient setting. Upon having my first child, I took a break from nursing to raise our daughter and took a chance on another passion, working for myself. Over the past few years, I’ve been involved with a variety of companies, helping them to build and grow. I continue to work as the COO and Marketing Director for author Darryl Nyznyk and simultaneously work on my independent children’s books. In the midst of each of these transitions, I struggled with my “what now” moment. This is ultimately how Collectively was born.

In discussions with women, we found that the fear, uncertainty, lack of support and resources added to the already challenging task of navigating their careers while also managing the many other responsibilities we as women have. Collectively was created with the goal to offer support during these moments in life. Our efforts are focused on truly understanding our client’s needs while consistently growing a premier list of Partners that can help women make the career transitions they are looking for.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Yes and no. From a young age, I knew I wanted to have a career where I worked with people and helped solve problems. The process to become a Nurse Practitioner took many years of school and training but it was ultimately a smooth journey in that I graduated with a degree in a field I was passionate about and was able to work in premier facilities that allowed me to excel as a NP.

After deciding to take a break from my NP career and start on a new path, I was faced with more struggles. A primary one has been “myself” and questioning if I was making the right decision leaving a career I truly enjoyed to find more flexibility to be a mom and more autonomy as an entrepreneur. I tried different things over the years and all the while questioned if this was the right move. A pivotal moment that helped show me I was making the right decision was a few years ago, I thought about getting my PhD so I could have the option to teach nursing students at the highest level. Upon being accepted, I forced myself to not think about what would look good or sound good but what would make me happiest. I ultimately decided to pass on getting my PhD and continue on this journey of forging my own path.

Since then, I have helped start and build Collectively as a co-founder. I work with women daily, helping them navigate similar transitions to mine. I feel fulfilled and so lucky to have found something that fuels my passion and provides me the flexibility to focus on the things that matter in my life, outside of work, like my family.

We’ve been impressed with Collectively, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
It’s really hard to pick just one, so I would say something that was present for a lot of my favorite memories. I grew up with three sisters on a great culdesac street by the beach in the Southbay. I have endless memories of riding bikes, roller skating, playing sports and running down to the beach on a daily basis with my sisters and the neighborhood kids. I feel so fortunate to have had such an idyllic upbringing where we felt safe and empowered to be kids!
