Hidden Gems: Meet Qortez Brown of Coach Tez Skills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Qortez Brown.

Hi Qortez, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a junior at Oakland University studying communications. I grew up in a single mother home with not much. I always watched my mother work hard. My mother at some point was a Janitor for only 7.00 an hour and had to take care of me growing up. Growing up watching her work hard made me want to even work harder in things such as school as well as basketball. How I started was that I always wanted to help others. I always had that dream of helping others in getting better at something. That something was basketball, I wanted to inspire as well as help athletes get to the next level. Two years ago, I was homeless staying with my uncle and sleeping on an air mattress and every time, I would write my goals and one of my goals was to be a basketball coach and I’m here today!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I would go through ups and downs in basketball. Covid would shut down gyms. When Covid was very popular. Another challenge would be patience because I wasn’t getting the results I wanted.

We’ve been impressed with Coach Tez Skills LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Coach Tez Skills LLC is a skill development company that helps high school – Professional players get to the next level. My job as a trainer and owner of a company is that I make sure my clients are producing at the next level at all times. They may consist of watching their film, training with them or even sending encouragement! What sets me apart from others is that I will go above and beyond with my clients and build a relationship with each and every one of them that goes beyond basketball; we can talk about life Anything.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I learned through the journey was to never take things for granted. When I was training with clients everyday, I would complain sometimes then once the gym was closed, I would often miss the gym. So that lesson taught me how to not take things for granted. Something can be gone quickly as it arrives. Also, it taught me patience when I first started training, I was only working with two guys at a time. After a time I started to get the results I wanted. Professional players started to work with me!
