Hidden Gems: Meet Monique De La Torre of Magia de Tierra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique De La Torre.

Hi Monique, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began my journey in holistic health well over 17 years ago. But in 2019, I launched my Etsy store selling Organic Fair trade handcrafted loose leaf blends. Fast forward to the covid Era, pop up shops began to pop up all over Los Angeles so I decided to take my love for tea to the streets of Los Angeles. Newly unemployed mother of three, I decided with a lil encouragement from a girlfriend to turn my love for herbal teas into my new adventure. But I wanted to do something a little different. I wanted to provide a healthy alternative to traditional teas/milk teas. So that is exactly what I did, I transformed the way most people view tea. Tea is just coffee’s more sophisticated older brother in my opinion. Our teas are 100% plant-based, sugar-free, diabetic-friendly and even fall into the Keto category!

We brew using high-quality Organic loose leaf blends and pair each blend with plant-based mylks and sweeteners and bottles in sustainable packaging. Our goal was to make wellness attainable to those who thought that it wasn’t.

In our local communities, so many think that they can’t afford to “treat themselves” to something healthy well, we priced our teas at an affordable price so that we care share the wealth that is health.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely NOT! I can’t tell you how many times I thought that I wasn’t cut out for this. I spent many days in my car crying trying to figure out how to make this possible. Thankfully I am blessed with so many amazing people in my corner who I couldn’t have done this without. From friends, family and even acquaintances, I have met along the way. I’m just happy that I didn’t give up. I think one of the most challenging things thus far has been getting all my ducks in a row with licensing, all the paperwork that comes along with running a small business in CA and being a one woman show. Managing production, advertising, social media, sales, events and so much more.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We specialize in 100% handcrafted small-batch Plant-based mylk teas. We use Organic ingredients and brew loose leaf in small batches to ensure the highest quality. We like to buy directly from the source from relationships made during travel around the world. Keeping our costs affordable and supporting farmers directly, doing so helps us keep our product affordable to the consumer as well. And we stray from sugar, artificial, and powdered teas products.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Yes! so many people love having healthy options that are grab and go. Convenience, affordability, sustainability. Health is wealth, especially during this Pandemic.
