Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Morris & Chivan Wang.
Hi Mark & Chivan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
SquaredCo started out as a hobby creating and selling pop culture merchandise online and at conventions. We quickly grew and began collaborating with notable creatives on different projects. These projects led to opportunities like curating gallery shows, producing branded events, and designing products for bands and celebrities. Fast forward to today, we’re a full-service agency who’s worked with some pretty fun clients like Stitcher, Team Coco, Cinépolis USA, House of Blues, Hollywood Candy Girls and Mazda.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle we’ve faced is trying to define what SquaredCo is. We’ve evolved so much in such a short period of time. Every project opens doors for more exciting opportunities and we are constantly expanding our capabilities and elevating the brand. At the core, we’re a company that thrives on supporting the creative endeavors of our clients and community.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about SquaredCo Studios?
SquaredCo Studios is a multi-disciplinary creative studio that specializes in branding, marketing, experiential design, product development, content creation, and creative printing services. We like to position ourselves as a one-stop-shop for creative services. We’re fortunate to work with a network of artists and vendors who are masters of their craft. Our clients know that they can come to us with just a spark of an idea and we’ll have the know-how and means to make it happen. Our hybrid skillset is the secret sauce that helps us bring their ideas to life. Our specialties overlap and complement each other in a great way: Mark is an experienced designer who is adept at project management and big picture thinking, and Chivan is a seasoned marketer who excels at the collaborative side of things like partnerships, communications and events. This dynamic allows us to look at projects holistically and provide our clients with integrated strategies that check all the boxes. Mark also hosts the SquaredCo Podcast with our good friend and illustrator, Jerrod Maruyama. They cover the latest in pop culture, design, fandom, and any other nonsense that comes to mind. It’s a nod to our beginnings and all the things that inspire us to keep on creating.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk is a factor for any small business. Starting a small business was a risk. Deciding to turn our small business into a full-time career was an even bigger risk. We try to be very calculated when it comes to risk-taking, but sometimes taking a leap can lead to some big opportunities.
