Hidden Gems: Meet Maddie Burke of Elevated Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddie Burke.

Hi Maddie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi! Thanks so much for having me here! I am a doctor of physical therapy and East Coast transplant. I’ve been enjoying sunny SoCal for over 4 years now. Growing up, I was always active with sports and looking for ways to avoid injury and improve performance. I believe that’s what led me to this field where I can help others do the same. While I’ve had the opportunity to work in many different settings, outpatient sports and orthopedics have been my happy place. I love helping people guide their bodies back to full performance so they can enjoy life again without things like painkillers or surgery. Sadly, many places I’ve worked in focused on getting as many people through the door rather than delivering the best quality treatments, which never sat well with me. I know people deserve better and that led me to start my own business: Elevated Physical Therapy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It certainly has been a wild ride since opening our doors! My fiancé and I signed our business lease on Friday the 13th of March 2020 – just a few days before a global pandemic changed the way we all live! We had some light updates to do to our space, and I just remember racing to Home Depot buying as much paint and material as we could, not knowing if it would remain open and we’d be able to return. Luckily, as a healthcare facility, we’ve been able to stay open throughout the pandemic, so we just had the challenge of navigating all the new rules, regulations, and CDC recommendations – all while making sure we can deliver the best care possible and keeping our clients comfortable and safe. We are so excited that, in spite of it all, we’ve been able to build a business and become part of our community here, even with facial expressions covered up!

As you know, we’re big fans of Elevated Physical Therapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a specialist, boutique wellness center that helps active people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s END (for good!) stubborn and frustrating foot, ankle, knee, back, or shoulder pains that keep them from doing the things they love to do. We love to help people to avoid things like going under the knife for invasive surgery, getting injection after injection just to ease the pain for a few weeks longer, and end the dependence on painkillers so they can get back to running, hiking, biking, CrossFit, and doing things like keeping up with the kids again. With us, each person gets the complete “first class” experience where they’re greeted by name the first moment they walk in the door until they’re back to living life on the go again. We think our clients should feel at home when they come to see us.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory actually has a lot to do with why I became a doctor of physical therapy in the first place. At age four, I was treated to an emergency helicopter ride to a children’s specialty hospital with a diagnosis of severe asthma. I have been blessed with parents who made sure I understood the severity and need to monitor and manage this condition, but also didn’t let it stop me from doing anything – including running! I’ve been a runner forever. Both my parents coached my elementary school cross country team. I had to work really hard to manage my asthma and run safely, and I think I’ve carried a lot of that work ethic with me throughout life. I understand what it feels like when your body doesn’t work the way that you want it to, which helps me really connect with my clients. Having a good race, good run, or good practice always gave me confidence that I could do hard things and I want to transfer that same energy to all of my hard-working clients!
