Hidden Gems: Meet Leeanna Gantt of Tooktake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leeanna Gantt.

Hi Leeanna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer just after Christmas 2017 and was in treatment throughout all of 2018.

While I was in treatment, I had tons of medications and supplements to help manage the side effects of my treatment. They were all on different schedules and in different forms. My family and I looked for a simple way to keep track of the ever-changing rotation of items and we couldn’t find anything. So, I started to make my own little system from sticky notes, and it really helped us a lot.

When my treatment was over, I discovered that I needed to take one medication, every day, for the next 5-10 years to help prevent my cancer from returning. As I started to feel better and return to my normal daily routines with friends and family, I found it harder to remember if I had taken my one little pill. It became really stressful for me again since this was supposed to be preventing my cancer from returning!

So, I took out my little labels and started to use them again.

Then I thought, I can’t be the only one who has a hard time keeping track of things like this. So, I started to ask friends and family to try out my tooktake labels, and the response was amazing! They found so many great uses for them and they all said that it really helped, especially my friends with younger children who would take liquid medications.

From that point on I knew that tooktake could help a lot of people so I decided that I was going to make tooktake a business and help as many people as I can!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting a small business has been tough since I don’t really have a business background. So, I have had lots of challenges along the way. I think the biggest obstacle has been that I don’t know what I don’t know, combined with being a boot-strapped business.

That being said, both of those things have forced me to be very creative with how I approach and solve problems.

Not having a preconceived notion of how things should work has worked has generally worked in my favor.

Tooktake still suffered from what I call “growing pains”, which is that each good thing that happens causes us to grow and also causes a new set of things to happen that I have to learn how to do on my own. But hopefully, soon we will be able to expand the team to help out with some of our growth!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tooktake?
I am super proud of my brand Tooktake! Tooktake is a super simple medication and supplement tracking system. What makes tooktake so different than most things out there is that tooktake was NOT designed for the elderly. It was designed with young busy people in mind.

To use tooktake labels you simply stick tooktake onto whatever you need to use or take and then pull off the perforated tab when you take your dose. Then, know at a glance if you took it or still need to take it!

We considered many things when designing tooktake labels to make sure that they would work well for the things busy active people are doing and might need.

One thing was making sure that tooktake could go right on the package of whatever people needed to use or take. That makes it, so there are no extra steps like sorting, counting, or programming. It also allows things to stay in the child-safe packaging with all the directions, warnings, instructions, and expiration info. All of these things go into making tooktake super easy to use.

This also makes it easy for everyone in the family to know if a medication has been given already and when the next dose is due, making it popular with parents, babysitters, caregivers, and even pet parents.

Another thing that was important after my own experience with medication was to make sure that tooktake worked on ALL forms of supplements and medications, not just pills. Most “pill organizers” are just that, only for pills. But that doesn’t help you if that’s not what you have. Liquids, creams, drops, powders, or even gummies just don’t work in a traditional pill container.

What about apps? We get that question a lot! I always say that apps are great if they work for you. We have heard from many of our users that tooktake is a great companion to an app because it lets you confirm if you really took or used what you were supposed to. So many times, people are in the middle of something when the initial reminder notifies them, then later if they get a reminder, they aren’t sure if they did it or not. Tooktake can help.

I could keep going forever about all the things that went into designing a super simple label, but I’ll stop with this thought; If you already have a great system in place to remember to use and take whatever you need to get and stay well, that’s wonderful, I am not asking you to change it at all!

But, if you are someone like me, searching for a simple solution that lets you know if you took or still need to take or use your wellness products, take a look at tooktake!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For people just starting out, I’d tell them to do some simple research before they start but don’t try to learn everything. Every business is so different; even if you do exactly what someone else did you maybe not get the same results. So, make sure you have looked at the costs associated with starting or getting a prototype, research your audience and get feedback (not just from your family or friends) and be really honest with yourself about how much risk you are willing to take. I have learned that a huge part of starting up has to do with how much you are comfortable risking; with big risks can come big rewards, but not always.

I am more of a slow-and-steady build kind of gal, but it’s important to figure out what you are before you get too deep into it.
