Hidden Gems: Meet Joanna Lee of EyessonYou

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Lee.

Hi Joanna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
EyesonYou was solely created from my passion in thoughts of starting my dream life early. Like many of you may always hear from clothing boutique owners, I always had a passion for fashion. I didn’t know how strong it was until I graduated high school and was taking GE classes at Pasadena City College. See, my goal was to transfer to a UC school because that’s what society told me to do. Get good grades, go to a “good” college, get a degree, blah blah blah. Applying to Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandise and transferring there was my big first move into starting my own clothing business at 22 years old. I majored in Apparel Management – this major teaches you how to build your business from the ground up. The name EyesonYou actually originated from my school projects. We had various projects on starting our own business and I would always name every project EyesonYou.

To be honest, I thought it was the cheesiest name at first and I was a little embarrassed to go present my business plan because of the name. Come to think of it, I always knew I wanted my business name to be that – I just didn’t have enough confidence. Now, I can confidently say that the meaning behind the name is to empower all people who wear my clothes. I want it to act as a second layer of skin and let it give them the confidence they already have in them. Have everyone’s EYES ON YOU and don’t feel insecure about it, OWN IT. Leave an impression everywhere you go, girl. You deserve it because everyone is already so beautiful, some of us just don’t know it yet. And to those who don’t, I want my clothes to be able to amplify that inner confidence and let it shine. And to those who already do, WALK IT LIKE YOU TALK IT.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting your own business will never be a smooth road. Haha – sorry to break it to ya! It’s not possible. There’s always new challenges along the way and when you think you got it figured out, another one hits the road. The biggest challenge for me right now would have to be running every aspect of my business. It’s me, myself, and I. I don’t have a fulfillment team, marketing agency, content creator, social media planner, buyer, stylist, product manager, you get the point. Oh, and there’s always people wanting free clothes but never wanting to support. I’m not saying you have to buy to support, but I am saying to stop asking for free clothes when your only intention is to get free clothes. I’ll get flooded with DMs from girls always saying how my clothes are so pretty and they love what I’m doing, but they’re not following me, so how would they know? Sometimes, it can get really overwhelming, but in all honesty, I love it. Starting your own business tests you in ways that you didn’t even know can be tested. Business is truly a journey of self-growth and development. I believe that success is an inside out journey and everyday, I learn something new about what I can do to improve my business and myself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about EyessonYou?
My clothing business is for women who love simplicity and looking effortlessly chic but also love staying comfortable. It’s a contemporary brand with high-quality pieces at an affordable price. When learning about how much retailers mark-up their products, I was in disbelief. I actually was. When my professor was telling me about the mark-up numbers, boy, my jaws were on the floor. I don’t believe in that and that’s why I did something different with my brand. At EyesonYou, clothes are high quality and affordable. It won’t shrink like crazy or deteriorate when you put it in the washer. It helps you stay up to date and fashionable easily, without breaking your bank.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Yes! I struggled with this too and I used Bumble Business. No, I’m not getting paid to say this, but I truly believe it’s a great way to meet new people from your area. I actually met my mentor from Business Bumble. If you’re not into that, it’s totally fine. I got more options for you – I know this one might sound basic and cliche but SOCIAL MEDIA. I didn’t realize it until this year, but you can meet so many great people who are on the same journey as you through social media. Crazy, I know. I think we’re all accustomed to one version of social media and it’s where people are posting highlights of their lives 24/7. But on the flip side, there are people on social media where they’re in the same boat as you are and they want to network with people just as much as you do. Reach out to them, chat with them, go on a zoom brunch date. I’m telling you this right now, I’ve met countless of business owners through Tiktok and Instagram and have built relationships with them. It’s great because we keep each other accountable and motivated whenever it’s needed, anytime, anywhere.
