Hidden Gems: Meet Imani Curry of Ms. Imani E. Makeup Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Curry.

Hi Imani, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My passion for makeup started in middle school after I became a cheerleader. It started off as just mascara and eyeliner with lipgloss, fast forward to my 10th-grade year in high school, brows and the MAC matte lipstick in the shade “Sin” opened a whole new door for me.

Still cheering in high school and growing my love for makeup, I found a YouTuber by the name of Aaliyah Jay, she really opened my eyes for the passion of makeup that I didn’t know I had, and that’s when my self-taught journey as a beauty enthusiast and makeup artist really took off.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I feel like all roads, when you’re following your true passion, has a few bumps, and maybe even a few headaches but it makes it all worth it when you see your growth.

When I dove into the full-face world, I had no idea how much really went into it! I started off looking like an angry bird with my blocky brows, then I didn’t know about contouring so I was only wearing foundation and concealer (that barely matched) so I looked ghostly, and let’s not even get into my eyeshadow phase.

After a couple of years of researching, I finally found a sweet spot that worked for me as far as makeup and around 2017 I began my journey as a beauty YouTuber.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ms. Imani E. Makeup Artistry?
Being an on and off again MUA and taking random services for people who liked my work in 2019, I finally decided that I would fully invest in myself and become a full-time makeup artist in 2020.

I currently specialize in all things hair and makeup. However, I am mostly known for my makeup glams. From anniversaries to wedding glams, or on the simpler side, soft glams for everyday wear.

What sets me aside from others is 2 main things, first thing is no that I understand there will always be “competition” but I’m only competing with myself. I’ll never have an issue with someone else winning in their field. Secondly, I believe in the “Bread Aisle” concept, which is “same idea, different executor”. I may be in an industry where everyone is doing the same thing, but my brand, my name, my authenticity and work is what sets me apart from everyone else. So just because everyone is doing it, doesn’t mean that I can’t.

I would say that I am most proud of my consistency and determination to always better myself as an artist and give my clients the best experience possible. I always want my clients to feel as though they’re the high-class celebrity when they sit in my chair.

Another thing that I am proud of and I would love for more people to know about is that, I launched my own cosmetic line, “Glam Sessions Beauty Academy” where you can buy makeup, hair, get tips from me and other respected individuals in the beauty industry, as well as take makeup classes with me to either learn how to do your own makeup or become a makeup artist.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Definitely! During the COVID-19 crisis, I was pregnant with my first child. That whole time spent in quarantine, my husband and I made sure that we maintained our mental stability for the sake of growing family. I also perfected my craft while in isolation, all I had was my face, my beauty room, a camera and my makeup, so YouTube and talking to my audience was my best friend for a while.

Overall, I definitely learned that the world around you is always changing and sometimes it can be a good or a bad thing, depending on how you respond to it. I chose, to respond in a way that was conducive to not only my health but my family’s health as well. I wanted to ensure maximum prosperity once it was over.
