Hidden Gems: Meet Helena Brana of Brana Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helena Brana.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a European Interior Designer and founder of Brana Designs, an interior design studio. Originally from Prague, Czech Republic, I was born into a humble and artistic family. My father was an architect (retired) and my mother is a painter. Living in Europe I had the opportunity to travel around the world extensively. The wide variety of natural world I enjoyed, combined with many styles of architecture I was exposed to later became the inspiration for my business. I studied economics and political science before eventually returning to my passion, interior design. I started to work as a designer in 2016 in Prague, where at that time, there was, and still is, a huge gap in the industry between interior designers and architects with limited market demand and opportunities for independent designers. Once I moved permanently to Corona del Mar, a beautiful community in Newport Beach, I soon noticed it was the complete opposite: architects and designers commonly collaborate & there are huge market opportunities. I also noticed quite a surprising gap for such market. Respectfully, all homes looked exactly the same inside out, and even when the designer was involved in the project, you just could not tell! Everything looked pretty much a copy-paste from Pinterest photos with no creativity and thoughtfulness of an actual client, and custom design. I was thinking if I am a client, why would I hire a designer to do this job that I can easily do myself? Why clients here settle for less if they can have more? And this is where I found my opportunity with my experiences & eye for details, signature fresh and modern aesthetic, and exclusive sources from all around the world,… a luxury boutique Brana Designs studio was found, and since that, we have completed many recognizable projects locally and internationally, just like I always envisioned.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacles and challenges were that when I moved from Prague to Corona del Mar and opened my studio, I really did not know many people, and I had to start building my network again. I also felt because I was from young female (mid-20s), and new in locality, it took a while for people to trust me which I was able to show through gorgeous projects that I completed.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in good or bad luck, I believe everything that happens is connected in one way or another, and there are reasons why something did or did not work for us. Of course, there are natural events that we can not control, but all of us have a choice to make a decision on what our role in these natural events will be.
