Hidden Gems: Meet Dexter Holman of Dat Smell Good

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dexter Holman.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Dat Smell Good started as a COVID hobby that turned into a business organically. I was making soap for my family and sending it to Georgia. They really liked the soap and I had an idea that I could possibly sell the soap at my local farmers market that I attended weekly, as a patron.

The specific market did not have craft vendors (handmade, non-food items), so I emailed hundreds of markets from SD to SF. I would travel far distances until I started to build my base markets closer to home(LA). Honestly, I was excited anytime I could go out to sell no matter what the location.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I started the business, I had a girlfriend that helped me manage some of my responsibilities, but after she left to go back to Paris, I was alone and very depressed.

This was a recipe for disaster, quickly sending me in a downward spiral of self-pity for months.

I recognized that if I didn’t regain the focus that everything would fall apart around me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Dat Smell Good specializes in crafting handmade goods for the home and body.

Starting out with just bath bombs and soap, Dat Smell Good’s top-selling products are our candles. The addition of candles actually changed the trajectory of the business.

Candles increased sales so much that I was able to focus 100% of my time on Dat Smell Good. I no longer needed outside sources of income to manage any of my bills.

Dat Smell Good’s success comes in part from having a great name. I can’t believe I am the first to trademark “Dat Smell Good”, even the psuedomark “That Smell Good”.

Everyone that passes my setup, usually mentions our name and chuckles to themselves or to their friends. I do believe that the trademark will be very valuable in the future.

On top of having a great name, we have phenomenal products that people can feel great about using. We use many high-quality ingredients, so our candles burn longer, our soaps last longer, and our bath bombs leave your body with a silky smooth finish.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
“Be comfortable with the uncomfortable.”

I never fully understood this statement until I became an entrepreneur. There’s times when things are just not going to be perfect, this is more often than not, but just keep working the plan and create a strategy that aligns with the principles of success.

“Problems/issues don’t just go away.”

No one is coming to your rescue. I found myself early on getting upset about not having anyone to help me. You have to be self-sufficient and handle the problems you face quickly and concisely.
