Today we’d like to introduce you to Candace Brooks.
Hi Candace, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a Black woman, I have come across many obstacles throughout my life’s journey. From pregnancy and then later down the road being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2018. It’s a rare autoimmune disease that eats away at the protective covering of the nerves, resulting in the disruption of the communication between the brain and the body. This particular disorder altered my life daily. I had to turn to series of medications that inadvertently caused complications to my body, including my hair. As I continued to get treatments, my hair started to break. I used many different natural hair products and many of them damaged my cuticles, creating split ends, and caused chemical burns within my scalp. My hair became dry, brittle and was getting harder to maintain every day. My hair slowly became my worst enemy.
After endless dissatisfaction among different manufactured hair products, I decided to create my own concoction. Within two to three years, my hair started to regain its length, volume and hydration back. I began to use them on my husband to help soothe his scalp psoriasis and then later, I started to use them on my daughter who suffers from eczema. Regarding to the medication I have to take consistently; my hair is finally able to stand a chance due to my product. With this breakthrough, this prompted me to be more involved within the hair industry. As a woman, our hair is a symbol of feminism, strength and patience, and with these products, it not only enhances the beautiful definition of one’s curls, it makes one’s hair journey manageable to endure.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course, being an entrepreneur has its challenges. There has been many trials and errors with creating these products until it finally met its satisfactory. As far as getting my name recognized and networking, it became intimidating at some points but I didn’t let that stop me. My love for helping people create a healthy bond with their hair overpowered my fears and pushed me to strive harder with my business.
