Hidden Gems: Meet Anders Dorney of Reds Backdoor Catering

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anders Dorney.

Hi Anders, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For me, it all started back at good old place called El Cid. Where the amazing Chef Olivia Hernandez took me under her wing. From there, I went on to become the Chef of numerous restaurants and eventually landing the catering chef at Pepperdine University in Malibu.

However, once the pandemic hit, they eventually let all employees go. So there I was jobless, smack in the middle of a global pandemic. I took some of the time to spend with my newborn son as my wife continued to work at the hospital. Yes, she’s a badass hero. After a few months, my good friend Jared ended up losing his job due to the pandemic as well. He eventually called me with this brilliant idea of starting our own catering company. BOOM.. the birth of Reds Backdoor Catering. We started off with offering a weekend menu, highlighting a special dish available for anyone to buy every Saturday from 11am-3:30pm in Simi Valley. Now we’re juggling our weekend menus, private catering’s, parties and events. It’s amazing. We both have such a strong passion for cooking. We truly believe it shows in every aspect of every dish. Heart is the most important ingredient of every recipe!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We’re still fairly new, so of course we have down weeks. It’s definitely different not having that secured income coming in every week. It gives you a whole different level of hunger to hustle with.

We’ve been impressed with Reds Backdoor Catering, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We offer weekend meals available for pick up in Simi Valley every Saturday from 11am-3:30pm. We don’t box a limit around ourselves as for what we “specialize” in. We’re sort of the jack of all trades when it comes to food.

Smoked Proteins, fresh local ingredients and a lot of heart and passion.

What we’re most proud of here at reds backdoor is passion we put into each and every meal. From the menu design to the shopping and prepping. It’s fun, it’s beautiful and it’s always delicious.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find someone that’ll put up with your worst days and push you even harder on your best days. That little boost of strong motivation makes the world of difference sometimes.
