Exploring Life & Business with Naudia Pate of Selina Rae Swimwear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Naudia Pate.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Absolutely. Hello, my name is Naudia Pate, I am a swimwear designer and entrepreneur currently living in Los Angeles, California. I’m originally from a small town in NorthEast Ohio.

I moved to California when I was 18 and attended San Diego State University for Business Marketing. It was always my dream since I was a young girl to move to California and kind of live that California dream. Shortly after moving to San Diego, I became obsessed with the beach and finding really cute and unique swimwear. I remember always going into swimwear stores in San Diego and never being able to find suits that flattered my body type. I’ve always been a curvier girl, and that’s something I’ve always been a little insecure about.

So instead of buying the unflattering bikinis, I would just make my own swimwear out of shirts, I would cut them or tie them to make them more flattering. I realized that when I wore them I would get a lot of compliments on them. I realized there was a need for swimwear for women looking to find super stylish and unique swimwear pieces that were also flattering and high-quality. So in 2020, Selina Rae Swimwear officially launched.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I definitely had some struggles along the way. Growing up, we didn’t have a lot of money or resources. Both my parents didn’t go to college, so it was definitely a challenge trying to navigate a new path for myself. And when I started my business, I realized that there was a huge learning curve.

Even though I had been studying business in college, there was still so much that I didn’t know and I would find myself living on YouTube and Google a lot. Everything from finding a manufacturer, to finding the right packaging, to learning about fashion, fabrics, and learning how to draw sketches, were all things that I wasn’t knowledgeable about at the beginning of my journey. This business for me is a one woman show right now, I wear a lot of hats. I wake up feeling like I am completely drowning most days. Completely overwhelmed by all of the things I need to do constantly for my business. Sometimes I don’t even know how I do it all. But I remember to take things one day at a time. I have a lot of stress relieving hobbies like meditation, yoga, journaling, reading, that help keep me focused and grounded.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way, I’ve spent money on things I didn’t need. There’s been a lot of times when I felt like I wanted to just give up, especially when my business is slow and I’m not getting the sales that I anticipated. But I always remember a quote my cousin told me at the very beginning of my journey which was “Anything is bound to be successful if you just don’t give up”. So anytime I feel overwhelmed or alone in my journey, I repeat this quote back to myself, it really helps me.

We’ve been impressed with Selina Rae Swimwear, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Of course, so I started a women’s swimwear brand called Selina Rae Swimwear which launched in April of 2020. The idea behind the brand is inspired by alter egos, this idea that we can transform into a more confident woman when we put on a certain outfit or feel our best. We specialize in unique, bold designs made from high-quality fabrics.

We are known for our high-waisted, seamless, high-cut swimwear that’s flattering for curvy body types. What really sets us apart from others is our attention to detail in every step of the design process. Each design takes months to perfect from beginning to end. If a piece is not perfect on the first round, I will go through multiple rounds of revisions to make sure the designs fit perfectly. Even the fabric we use took months to source, because I wanted to use the best quality fabric so our pieces could last for years. I make it a priority of mine that each design I launch is created with my customers in mind.

I am most proud of the growth of my brand’s image over the past two years. I really wanted to hone in on the marketing and branding such as our website, product photography and instagram feed. Our newest season is launching in summer 2022, featuring all-new designs and colors in tops, bottoms, and one pieces.

We have been looking forward to our newest collection, our Resort Collection. Featuring bright colors and bold designs. We are also excited to announce we are expanding our sizing and will include sizes XS-XL. We pride ourselves on being inclusive and representing all different kinds of women.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would have to be any memory at my grandparent’s house. My grandparents lived in a very rural area with a lot of land and nature surrounding their home in a small town in Champion, Ohio. It was very different from the chaotic and busy city life that I now live in Koreatown.

I remember growing up always taking walks in the woods with my grandpa. My grandma would take my siblings and I to the pond in their backyard and we would put a huge net inside and would catch frogs, tadpoles, and fish.

I remember catching toads in my grandma’s back garden and picking blueberries off of her blueberry bushes and making pancakes with them the next morning. There are so many more, but those memories I cherish so much especially as I get older and life gets to be faster and more hectic. These moments were really special for me. I think it really shaped me into the woman I am today. These memories help keep me grounded and remind me to stop and listen to the birds and smell the flowers once in a while, and to always be grateful for the things I have, no matter what.
