Exploring Life & Business with Mickey Kravitz of MAK Hair Products

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickey Kravitz.

Hi Mickey, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Los Angeles from Kansas City in the late 80’s, my band Harlow got a record deal. I have always been a musician and started out in glam rock and as you know hair is a big part of that scene. I continued doing music in and out of lots of Hollywood bands (Baby Strange, The Smash and a few other bands). I’m also the type of person that likes to come up with ideas and make it happen. I opened up a pizza restaurant called Rock N Roll Pizza just because I wanted the box to look like a record. I started one of the first internet radio stations to have live audio and live video I also did a radio show on KRLA here in Los Angeles where I interviewed some of the biggest bands in the world and had so much fun doing it. I spent five years directing and doing voice over for the EBRU TV network so if I get an idea, I will try to do it. In 2012, I was searching for something new and after getting asked everywhere,” Are you a musician or a hairdresser?” I got the crazy idea of starting my own hair product line. I was never really 100% happy with the products I was using so I would always mix things together to try to make them work better for me. I found a lab and manufacture and started the long process of developing my products one by one. I started out with a hair paste then hair spray. Now I have hair growth support shampoos and conditioners, purple shampoo and conditioner, argan oil treatment, hair growth serum and eyelash growth serum.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The only obstacles have been branding, getting the name out to the world and coming up with good or clever marketing. The world is always changing so I might have a good idea for a marketing plan but then a month later it’s outdated. I don’t like to know much about what I’m getting into when I start something, that way I keep my drive and passion at 110 %. If I knew all the in’s and out’s before I start something, it takes all the passion away. I like to just overcome things as they come up.

We’ve been impressed with MAK Hair Products, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
All our products are made in the US, right here in Van Nuys, Ca. We specialize in Hair Growth support and Non-Comedogenic Products. We perform no animal testing. I work with my lab directly on each product and when I feel I have something that holds up the way I want. I let a few hairdresser friends try it and get feedback before I finalize any product. The Zoe line of products are hair growth support shampoo & conditioner with natural DHT blockers to help stop hair loss and promotes hair growth support. Also we have a purple version of the shampoo & condition for blonde hair to color tone and bring out the best in the blonde, both are Non-Comedogenic. Our hair paste Glypto Blue and Dynato hair spray are both Non-Comedogenic and are eXtra strong hold. The newest products that will be a part of the Zoe line are the hair growth serum with Redensyl and the eyelash growth serum. These two products have been in testing for a few months are pretty amazing. We have plans of adding a couple more products in the coming months and next year, we are expanding to face creams and anti-aging products. I always want to make sure my products do what they are supposed to do, really work, safe and live up to having my name on it.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
The supporters are every single person that has ever bought my products. Without them I would have had to pack up and go home. I thank each and every person that has ever bought from us. After almost ten years every I still get excited every time I see a new person place an order.
