Exploring Life & Business with Mariam Jobe of The Jaiye Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariam Jobe.

Hi Mariam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?

Planing is a predetermined cause of Action . With humility, I knew I had potential to make an impact in society and this dates back to my formative years.

I was born in a small country called The Gambia , in West Africa. I relocated to Anchorage Alaska with both parents and siblings. I started working in corporate America at a very tender age where I found a passion  to make this world a better  place. As I leaned towards my early twenties, I set up a non profit organization to educate and support families battling with sickle cell disease. This was purely humanitarian work premised on the fact that one of my siblings suffers from this dreadful disease. Through my organization and my work to find a cure for Sickle cell disease, I was able to travel and coordinate events twice a year at the United Nation headquarters in New York , bringing leaders from all over the world to partner and work together in pursuit of a cure.

The Jaiye company came to being when I was pregnant with my Son. I did an extensive research any  mother would do to buy products for their child, but, with an objective to find the absolute safest products for my unborn child. Then it dawned on me that there were no clean/honest diapers & wipes on the market. So it was show time for this first time Mom.

I embarked on an extensive research to find a solution. After a year of carefully designing and finding the right materials: The ”Jaiye Jaiye” 100% biodegradable bamboo diapers was born.

Having worked in corporate America for 15 years with a legal and finance baground, creating a bamboo diaper line and products was never within my reach but I wanted to create something HONEST that would connect me to my child and other mothers out there, and I thought to my self Diapers and wipes are the answer.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Creating and becoming a small business owner was never an easy road. I was very determined to build my brand and was even committed to build a brand that was not only good for my child but also for the environment. I went through endless manufactures to create my 100% bamboo diapers. I wanted not only the best, but the absolute best of the best, and also certified 100% bamboo manufacturers who can honestly and openly share the process and let me in on every step of the way.

As a new business with limited financial resources , I had challenges getting funding through financial institutions , After many rejections from banks , investors, and friends. I still wanted to give in on my dream to give my child, other children and the planet a chance for a better tomorrow.

I sold my gold, my expensive designer wear and cashed out my 401K to be able to sustain my determination to prove that I CAN do this.

My husband , my  family and couple of friends have been my backbone. They held me tight when everyone turned their back on me. My success is not only premised on my determination, but my family whose biggest fan I am. They were there every step of the way. I decree my profound gratitude for the success of this project; they deserve it.
