Exploring Life & Business with Kevin Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Garcia.

Hi Kevin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Kevin Garcia born and raised in the city of South Central Los Angeles. I was blessed with having both of my parents in my life who helped raise me into the man I am today. Both of my parents are from a city in Mexico called Michoacán. My father came to the U.S during his teenage years while my mother was born in Mexico but raised in the U.S.

My parents provided me with the utmost love and support which helped guide me throughout my childhood life. As a teenager, I attended the high school called William and Carol Ouchi High School located in South Los Angeles, CA, and on the weekends, I would go help my grandfather and my uncle’s roof houses. Attending a small high school came with its pros and cons however as I look back now this period of my life has ended up having one of the biggest impacts on my life.

While attending high school here I was given the opportunity to attend a program at UCLA Anderson School of Management called The Riordan Scholars Program from my sophomore year up until my Senior year. Here I became exposed to the world of real estate, financial investments, as well as opportunities to meet successful individuals who shared their stories allowing us to create a network with them. Coming from a Latino upbringing, owning a home has always been stressed however, no one ever explains to you how to do it.

I became intrigued about learning the most I can and taking this knowledge back home where I would share it with my friends and family, ultimately becoming a resource. After high school, I went on to attend Santa Monica College for my first year, and then, I ended up transferring to El Camino College in the city of Torrance. Here, I continued my studies in real estate, and in the Summer of 2020, I obtained my real estate salesperson license and went on to join a real estate firm called WLM Realty in the city of Inglewood.

Here, I began my career in real estate, learning valuable skills and tools on how to run a successful business. I closed my first real estate transaction within the first 3 months of being licensed. The following year, I went on to graduate in the Spring of 2021 with an associated degree in real estate. Since then, I have helped multiple families achieve homeownership. I stand here today with the expertise and knowledge provided to me throughout the past 2 years from my mentors and experiences.

I am currently working on obtaining my real estate broker’s license later this year with the goal of opening up my own real estate firm in the near future. I dedicate my story to my parents, my brothers, all of my family, and the many mentors who guided me and helped provide me with the answers to my questions.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, I faced challenges within the school as well as outside in the real world. Coming from a first-generation family, only my mother attended college for 1 semester before she had to leave and become a mother at a young age.

She did her best to prepare me and my 2 brothers for college with the knowledge she had however, I had to learn on my own how to navigate the college application process as well as apply for other opportunities such as scholarships and FAFSA. I had to make the decision on where I would be attending college and beginning my career which is not an easy task for an 18-year-old.

Outside of school, I had to deal with the reality of my community being filled with drug use and gang violence, for a teenager it was easy to fall victim to peer pressure and venture off into the wrong path.

We’ve been impressed with KG ESTATES and WLM Realty, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
KG ESTATES was born out of my passion for real estate and helping others. My real estate broker Odest Riley has been a key mentor in my success thus far, his expertise in various aspects of real estate and finance has provided me with the stepping stones to launching my business and career.

Here at WLM Realty and Financial, we specialize in helping first-time home buyers, sellers, investors, veterans as well as current homeowners looking to refinance or are in need of help with any other loan modifications.

Every person’s story is unique and that’s why every job requires a new set of skills that allow us to help make the transition into their next chapter as easy and stress-free. We pride our business on helping minorities and people of color achieve homeownership also known as the American Dream!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The lessons I learned from my parents at a young age helped me navigate the real world and look for opportunities to grow and prosper. My parents taught me the importance of working hard and always doing the right thing even when no one is looking. My older brother taught me the importance of having self-confidence, decisions are made based on what you believe, and having doubt will only keep you from following your passion.

My grandfather and uncle taught me to always save for a rainy day because not every day the sun will shine. Roofing houses on the weekend was no easy task, It required intense manual labor which helped me develop a strong work ethic. As I grew older, surrounding myself with mentors who have walked the path I’m currently on helped me understand learning from others’ mistakes and failures is the greatest key to success.

I learned there are countless other successful individuals who have documented their experiences in books, podcasts, articles, essays, videos, etc, serving as a valuable resource for those who follow. Your greatest teacher will always be your own experiences, that’s why you must learn to take every day as a new learning opportunity to grow into there person you wish to be.
