Exploring Life & Business with Helen Haile of Ava&company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Haile.

Helen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Ethiopia been in the United States for over 25 years now. I’m a mother of four beautiful children. I started falling in love with event planning from hosting my kids birthday parties using whatever I find in my home or my local craft store to DIY something that they were into at the time. I remember the first birthday party I had was for my oldest son and it was a Minecraft themed birthday party and I use cardboard cut out sword and made TNT piñata for him and he thought that was the coolest thing ever! Ever since then I was hosting more parties for my family and friends always looking for ways to make the event different and personalized. Two years ago, I decided to launch my business Ava&company naming it after my daughter Ava in hopes of some day being a mother and daughter woman owned business. My business caters to all events that calls for a celebration whether it’s a baby shower, birthday parties, graduation or something intimate like traditional luxury picnic style setting at the comfort of your own home or any location of your choice.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business with having no business management background have been a learning experience. Almost everything I know about running a business I have either googled it or watched countless videos on YouTube. My first year of running my business I saw no profit I found myself under charging clients for the time I spent preparing for the event and the inventories used but I’m getting better at pricing. Just two weeks ago I had to find out that even with my business license I cannot run my business in certain areas of the beach in Oceanside because they are privately owned and you have to get written permission which I was told it’s lengthy process by the property manager. So it’s hasn’t been a smooth road but I’ll keep going n growing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ava&company ?
My business caters to all events that calls for a celebration whether it’s a baby shower, birthday parties, graduation or something intimate like traditional luxury picnic style setting at the comfort of your own home or any location of your choice. I also provide a balloon garland arrangements.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5 to 10 years, I see my business growing its clientele, adding event equipment rentals, pop-up picnics in my area, and catering to large group events like weddings.
